Video posted to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page revealed how dire the situation had become with the dog so thin and malnourished that its ribs were clearly visible beneath his skin. The dog was also covered in fleas, suffering from an overwhelming infestation that had progressed to a horrifying stage. Authorities said parts of the dog\u2019s skin had become necrotic, a sign of prolonged suffering and untreated medical issues. The dog also had a badly infected leg.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, animal cruelty specialists immediately attempted to intervene. They urged Carroll to surrender the dog so it could receive emergency lifesaving treatment, but authorities say Carroll initially refused. He later agreed to relinquish Chance.<\/p>\n
Chance was rushed to the Animal Specialty and Emergency Hospital in Rockledge, where veterinary staff worked to assess the full scope of his condition. But the damage was severe \u2014 and irreversible.<\/p>\n
Despite their efforts, veterinarians determined that Chance\u2019s condition was beyond recovery. The dog was humanely euthanized.<\/p>\n
Following an investigation, the Brevard County Sheriff\u2019s Office Fugitive Unit tracked down Carroll. In a separate video released by the sheriff\u2019s office, deputies can be seen taking Carroll into custody.<\/p>\n
“You do not harm a dog or a cat or any other animal in Brevard County unless you want to join him sitting in jail,” said Sheriff Ivey.<\/p>\n
Carroll now faces one count of aggravated animal cruelty.<\/p>\n
A judge has set his bond at $10,000.<\/p>\n
The sheriff\u2019s office is also urging the public to remain vigilant. <\/p>\n
