MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – Plenty of soccer fans showed up at Miami Stadium ahead of the Uruguay and Cape Verde World Cup match. <\/p>\n
Fans can be seen throughout the fan zone representing Cape Verde, and others representing Uruguay, while taking pictures in front of a large soccer ball.<\/p>\n
One woman even decided to take advantage of the global moment to announce an upcoming baby arrival. <\/p>\n
Cape Verde\u2019s goalkeeper, Vozinha, captivated fans all around the world after his performance and received instant fame. <\/p>\n
After an unforgettable World Cup debut against Spain, soccer fans wonder if Cape Verde can do it again and hold off Uruguay on Sunday night. <\/p>\n
Fans arrived early to watch the matchup between Uruguay and Cape Verde. <\/p>\n
This will be the first time the two teams meet on the pitch. <\/p>\n
7News spoke with fans, and they said they\u2019re excited that these teams are at this level. <\/p>\n
\u201cProbably this is going to be the only time in my life that FIFA is going to be in the US and Cape Verde is going to be playing and I\u2019ll be able to watch them so it\u2019s a huge deal for me, you know what I mean?\u201d said a soccer fan. <\/p>\n
After an electric night, the match ended in a draw, 2-2.<\/p>\n
Fans watched as Uruguay and Cape Verde each responded with multiple goals, as it\u2019s the second time Cape Verde has held off its opponent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re small but powerful, small but mighty,\u201d said a Cape Verde fan. <\/p>\n
\u201cI never had a better gift to spend the time with my kids and the game for the country that I love, Cape Verde,\u201d said a Cape Verde fan.<\/p>\n
\u201cThinking about history is their first goal in a World Cup, so I\u2019m happy for them, but I think we have a better chance. Uruguay, let\u2019s go,\u201d said a Uruguay fan. <\/p>\n
The Uruguay and Cape Verde World Cup match was the second FIFA World Cup match Miami Stadium has hosted.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a World Cup, nothing better. It\u2019s the absolute better if you love soccer, this is the best,\u201d said Uruguay fan Leo Scarone.<\/p>\n
Uruguay\u2019s first game in the tournament ended in a draw against Saudi Arabia, but their fans are not worried. <\/p>\n
\u201cI expect that we will win. You and I expect a 2-0, so let\u2019s see how it goes,\u201d said Scarone.<\/p>\n
It will be Uruguay\u2019s 15th appearance in the FIFA World Cup. <\/p>\n
Uruguay has two World Cup wins, and they won the first-ever World Cup championship back in 1930 and again in 1950.<\/p>\n
From a team with deep history in the tournament, to one writing its own now, Cape Verde\u2019s debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been pretty epic. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe here, for us it\u2019s a dream to be here. Doesn\u2019t matter if we have one point already or not, but just for this game it\u2019s amazing,\u201d said Cape Verde fan Fabio Gomes.<\/p>\n
Whether people were rooting for the teams that played on the pitch on Sunday night, it didn\u2019t matter in most cases because fans said they were excited to see a match in person and loved having the chance to watch a FIFA World Cup game right in South Florida. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe love Miami. We love South Florida. We\u2019re so happy. The weather is marvelous, and the beach is amazing,\u201d said a soccer fan. <\/p>\n
The next game at Miami Stadium is on June 24 with Scotland against Brazil.<\/p>\n
