TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – June is recognized as Men\u2019s Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Apalachee Center in Tallahassee is encouraging men to speak up and seek support.<\/p>\n
Some men find it difficult to reach out for help when they are struggling, according to Robert Stewart, a crisis services supervisor at the center.<\/p>\n
Stewart has worked in the mental health field for 16 years and said he has identified several challenges that impact men\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany men are not really taught the tools and the skills growing up to express and process emotions, and we carry that into adulthood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Another challenge, Stewart said, is that many men are conditioned to handle problems in isolation.<\/p>\n

He said some of the most important first steps are realizing you are not alone and starting a conversation with someone you trust.<\/p>\n
Increased irritability, anger, restlessness, or withdrawing from friends, family and daily activities can be warning signs that someone is struggling.<\/p>\n
Stewart also warned against bottling up emotions or stress. \u201cIf we wait until things explode, it can be truly difficult for anyone to handle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Men\u2019s Mental Health Month aims to encourage open conversations and create safe spaces for support.<\/p>\n
