Most recently the Heat and Boston Celtics were pegged as likely partners for the Bucks superstar. Charania reports that the Celtics made an aggressive play but were not ultimately successful:

The Celtics aggressively pursued Giannis, offering Milwaukee a package featuring 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks, sources tell ESPN. The Bucks seriously negotiated with two finalists in recent weeks: Miami and Boston, which were both on Antetokounmpo’s list of preferred destinations.

The 31-year-0ld forward averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in 28.9 minutes per game for the Bucks over 36 appearances in an injury-ridden 2025-26 season. He shot 62.4% from the field.

Antetokounmpo has been nominated to the NBA All-Star Team for 10 consecutive years. He was named NBA MVP in 2019 and 2020, winning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2020 as well. He led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA Championship.

The picks in question have been detailed, as well as the timing:

The Heat are sending to Milwaukee unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033 along with No. 13, a pick swap in 2030 and a 2033 second-rounder, according to sources.

The trade does not include any additional teams — it is a one-to-one move, sources said — but both the Heat and Bucks will execute the deal on July 6, which leaves the framework open to see if there are opportunities to expand.

It’s pretty clear the direction the Bucks were going here.

Herro scores 21.5 points per game and is only 26 years old. He’s a no-harm, no-foul acquisition for Milwaukee. They could keep him on a rebuilding timeline, living with his lack of defense, they could let his $33 million contract expire next summer, or they could try to flip him for more assets. As Charania pointed out above, this trade was announced early. It will not be consummated until July, leaving room for third teams to bid for Herro’s services preemptively.

Jaquez Jr. is 25 years old. He was in contention for Rookie of the Year three years ago. He finished second in the Sixth Man of the Year voting this season. He hasn’t lived up to the early promise of stardom but part of that may have been a crowded field in Miami. He’ll have the chance to play, and score, more with the Bucks. He’s an efficient shooter at 51% from the field. Overall, he’s an upside guy.

Ware played this season under a shadow. He has the gifts to become one of the bright, young centers in the league but seldom stayed in Miami’s rotation for long. There was an oil-and-water thing going on somewhere. That may have been Ware’s fault. Either way, he’s going to get a restart for a team with all the incentive in the world to use him. He shoots 53% overall, just a shade under 40% from the arc, and has athleticism to put the lights out…half the time by leaping to the rafters and breaking them personally. The Bucks will hope they got a major steal with this throw-in. If not, it was probably still worth the risk.

Add in the picks and Milwaukee’s aim is consistent, if not secure. This was about building the next generation, not reloading in the current one. That explains them skipping over Brown who, while more talented by far than anyone we just mentioned, would eat salary and not be enough on his own to carry the team to the promised land.

I’m seeing some questions below about the draft picks in play for Milwaukee now, plus the picks and swaps the Trail Blazers have from them. Why didn’t they want their picks back from Portland? Why bother with picks so far in the future from Miami?

Remember the new lottery rules. The 3-2-1 system makes everybody’s chances of winning relatively equal. Lottery drawings happen for all 16 positions. There’s no reverse order. Bad record or good record doesn’t matter nearly as much now. It’s all chance. The only way to get an edge is to give yourself more chances.

Why didn’t Milwaukee want their own picks back? They don’t need their own picks. All they need is non-playoff-team picks. In fact, their own picks from 2028-2030 may not be the best possible assets if they truly suck during those seasons, because technically the worst-record teams only get 2 balls in the drawing, not 3. But even if they get 3 balls, Adam Silver is like NBA Oprah now. “YOU get 3 balls! And YOU get 3 balls! You all get 3 baaaah-aaallllssss!”

Milwaukee gets unprotected picks from Miami in 2031 and 2033 plus a pick swap in 2030, which is as good as an unprotected pick if Miami ends up high in the draft order. The Heat have a history of not tanking. Unless things change, they’re not going to end up on the lowest rungs of the league ladder. But if the team that just traded for a 31-year-old Giannis can’t keep him or can’t get MVP-level production out of him between ages 36-38, chances are they could end up just where Milwaukee wants them: out of the playoffs, but not cellar-dwelling. Guess what? You get 3 balls too!

In essence, Milwaukee just did to Miami what the Portland Trail Blazers did to Milwaukee in the Damian Lillard deal. Lose the aging superstar now, get possibly-prime draft assets later. Except Portland got screwed by this new system, as the Bucks will probably stink for the next few seasons. If reverse order of record still counted for anything, the Blazers would be sitting pretty. It doesn’t. Milwaukee and Miami accounted for that in a way that Portland couldn’t.

Long story short, the Heat don’t mind losing future lottery picks that might be just like everybody else’s if they get Giannis in the deal. Milwaukee gets to double their chances of getting ultra-high picks in three future seasons in exchange for Giannis. Everybody wins.

If the traditional lottery system were still in place, the picks Portland holds would have been far more valuable than Miami’s. With 3-2-1 ruling the day now, the difference between the Miami picks and Portland’s offering are more timing than quality. And there you go.

Now, who’s betting on Tyler Herro to Portland for Jerami Grant and one of those Milwaukee draft assets that the Blazers hold? Or yikes…two?

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga is over.
