{"id":318164,"date":"2026-06-24T15:00:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T15:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/318164\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T15:00:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T15:00:12","slug":"tallahassee-mayoral-contenders-butt-heads-on-data-centers-ice-and-other-issues-at-candidate-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/318164\/","title":{"rendered":"Tallahassee mayoral contenders butt heads on data centers, ICE and other issues at candidate forum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With less than eight weeks to go until the August Primary, Tallahassee\u2019s four mayoral candidates shared differing visions for Florida\u2019s capital city at a forum hosted by WFSU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"> The field features former Sen. Lorrane Ausley, IT entrepreneur Michael Foust, City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow\u00a0and civil rights lawyer Darryl Parks. Moderators asked candidates about a wide-ranging set of issues, including artificial intelligence data centers, cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), property tax cuts, violent crime, pay raises for city employees and recent friction on the City Commission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unsurprisingly, Matlow drew the strongest contrast with incumbent Mayor John Dailey, with whom he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/local\/2026\/05\/14\/tallahassee-commission-talks-hud-grant-matlow-false-accusation\/90068566007\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">publicly feuded<\/a> and even gotten into prolonged shouting matches on the dais over <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wfsu.org\/wfsu-local-news\/2024-04-25\/john-dailey-jeremy-matlow-have-verbal-fight-about-calvin-riley-case\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">police accountability<\/a>, City Manager Reese Goad\u2019s job performance, and other disagreements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Matlow gave Dailey an \u201cF\u201d when candidates were asked to assign Dailey a letter grade for his job performance. Foust awarded Dailey a \u201cB,\u201d while Ausley and Parks refused to answer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Matlow also was the only candidate to say he was willing to repeal Tallahassee\u2019s controversial 287(g) agreement that directs the Tallahassee Police Department to cooperate with ICE. The Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/23\/in-slim-vote-tallahassee-keeps-287g-pact-after-long-debate\/86840062007\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">voted 3-2 to maintain the agreement<\/a> last year, with Matlow opposed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.razackforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-800591 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Razack728x90-May-15-2023-at-17.01.44-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"91\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foust and Parks expressed disapproval of ICE\u2019s tactics, but opposed repealing the agreement. Ausley was noncommittal, saying the 287(g) issue gave her \u201ca great deal of concern,\u201d but added that \u201cwe need to keep illegal immigrants out of the country and off our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another issue that split candidates was whether to adopt a data center moratorium. Several counties in the Big Bend have advanced moratoriums or bans in recent weeks, but Tallahassee City Commissioners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/11\/tallahassee-leaders-vote-down-data-center-ban-heres-why\/90504545007\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">voted down a ban<\/a> 3-2 on June 11.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ausley and Matlow said data centers should not be built in Tallahassee, while Foust and Parks opposed blanket bans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur Mayor needs to find every possible way to help our economy,\u201d Parks said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asked if all city employees should receive a 4% raise regardless of whether property taxes are eliminated in November, Ausley and Foust were supportive, while Matlow said employees already making $150,000 should not get raises. Parks also came out against an across-the-board raise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-709850 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Florida-Politics_728x100-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Matlow was also the only candidate to oppose the city\u2019s controversial 3-2 vote last December to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/florida-golf-course-sale-slaves-graves-outrage-tallahassee\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">sell the 178-acre Capital City Country Club<\/a> to private owners for $1.255 million. He blasted the deal, claiming the property was \u201cinsanely\u201d undervalued and was now being turned into an exclusive golf club by billionaires.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThat\u2019s not how we protect the public trust,\u201d Matlow said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ausley and Parks said they ultimately would have voted in favor, though Parks criticized the handling of the unmarked graves of enslaved people on the property. Foust supported the golf course sale, arguing it was underused and the city needed the funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A self-described \u201cliberal Republican\u201d who recently changed his party registration, Foust was the only candidate to support consolidating Tallahassee and Leon County governments. He pitched his tech background as an asset that could help the city run more efficiently and benefit Tallahassee\u2019s gig workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foust also broke from his three Democratic opponents by arguing Tallahassee is \u201coverly environmentally sound,\u201d accusing NIMBY attitudes of \u201cstifling economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ausley presented herself as a \u201cbridgebuilder,\u201d leaning on her 14 years as a Democrat in the GOP-dominated legislature. She blamed both Dailey and Matlow for the frequent 3-2 divide on the Commission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foust placed the blame squarely on Matlow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAbsolutely that\u2019s on Matlow,\u201d Foust said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Matlow downplayed his personal beef with Dailey and the friction at City Hall, arguing voters were more concerned with affordability issues than political squabbles, and that the Commission voted unanimously 93% of the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Matlow, the other 7% was a result of the majority \u201craising taxes, selling public land to billionaires or doing something destructive to our environment.\u201d He added that he did not regret any votes he had cast in the minority.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The race to replace Dailey, who won a <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/568979-john-dailey-kristin-dozier-showdown-in-tallahassee-mayor-race-splits-democrats\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">contentious and narrow re-election<\/a> in 2022 and announced last year he would not seek a third term, has already become an expensive fight. Parks has raised $284,000 through June 12, with Ausley close behind at $270,000 and Matlow at $169,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foust has only raised $5,300, but teased Tuesday that \u201cyou might be surprised\u201d by the next campaign finance reports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Primary Election Day is Aug. 18.
