(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/\">WWSB<\/a>) &#8211; A family was able to call for help and stay afloat after their boat capsized because they had the required safety gear aboard, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A boat capsizing can quickly become dangerous, and having the right equipment ready can help keep a bad situation from getting worse, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThis family had all they needed to call for help and stay afloat until we arrived,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s office said in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s far better to have this gear at the ready and not need it than to need it and not have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/2026\/06\/22\/manatee-county-beach-patrol-gives-details-after-136-water-rescues-performed-three-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/2026\/06\/22\/manatee-county-beach-patrol-gives-details-after-136-water-rescues-performed-three-days\/\">Manatee County Beach Patrol gives details after 136 water rescues performed in three days<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Required boating safety equipment includes a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device for each person aboard, a sound-producing device, a visual distress signal and a fire extinguisher, according to the department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officials also recommend boaters carry a marine VHF radio and a cellphone as a backup to contact emergency services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Boaters should check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission\u2019s website for a complete list of required safety equipment based on vessel size.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WWSB.
