{"id":320088,"date":"2026-06-26T00:11:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T00:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/320088\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T00:11:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T00:11:12","slug":"florida-politicians-react-to-supreme-court-decision-on-tps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/320088\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida politicians react to Supreme Court decision on TPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Supreme Court has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/25pdf\/25-1083_f204.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">allowed the Donald Trump administration to end<\/a>\u00a0legal protections for migrants fleeing violence and natural disaster in Haiti and Syria, exposing hundreds of thousands more people to potential deportation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Justices voted 6-3 to overturn lower court orders and allow the Department of Homeland Security to swiftly <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/appeals-court-immigration-tps-haiti-trump-131aefcc1d9a0bd23ecd376fc7fe8b07\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">end temporary protected status<\/a> (TPS), a program that protects <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tps-el-salvador-trump-bukele-immigration-migrants-75abc56ae89a92feb88c6b3f66f5dd68\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1.3 million people from 17 countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It marked another victory at the high court for President Trump\u2019s sweeping crackdown on immigration. Though the conservative-dominated court has put the brakes on some of Trump\u2019s immigration policies, it handed him a second win this week in a decision\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-supreme-court-haiti-syria-tps-1bbbf8115f984a0d53336656924e989d\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">clearing the way<\/a>\u00a0for the revival of a policy restricting immigrants seeking asylum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The court\u2019s conservative majority found that immigration authorities have sole authority over the program, and the law doesn\u2019t allow judges to intervene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor cast dissenting votes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hklaw.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-702884 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Florida_Politics_and_Influence_Magazine_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida politicians reacted swiftly and forcefully to the ruling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gov. Ron DeSantis called the ruling a \u201ccorrect decision\u201d in an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/2070160194504388965?s=20\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">X post<\/a>, adding that the \u201c3 liberal Justices\u201d who voted \u201cno\u201d were of the opinion \u201cthat \u2018temporary\u2019 protective status (sic) is essentially \u2018permanent\u2019 status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost said the decision will \u201cdevastate families, communities, and our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cImmigrants make America exceptional, and TPS holders have built lives here and contributed so much to our communities,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will continue fighting to protect TPS and the stability and dignity they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz called the ruling \u201ca failure of judgment,\u201d warning that deporting Haitian TPS holders to \u201ca country our own State Department says is too dangerous to visit\u201d will have cascading economic consequences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rubinturnbull.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/rt_webad_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-335063\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHaitian TPS holders are legal workers who support our health care system, our infrastructure, and our economy in South Florida,\u201d he said. \u201cDeporting them to a country in a declared state of emergency means fewer caregivers, higher costs, and lives at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz called the decision \u201cdespicable\u201d and said she plans to introduce legislation to reverse it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHundreds of thousands of families who followed the law, passed multiple criminal background checks, earned work permits, and paid taxes will be torn apart, thrown in ICE jails, or sent back to a nation overrun by criminal gangs who murder and kidnap at will,\u201d she said. \u201cHaitian-American children \u2014 U.S. citizens \u2014 will be orphaned, detained in horrific conditions, or deported alongside their parents to imminent danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell emphasized the legal contributions of TPS recipients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHundreds of thousands of people woke up today protected by the promise of America. Tonight, many are wondering whether that promise still exists,\u201d she said. \u201cThese are our neighbors, coworkers, and community members. They work legally, pay taxes, raise families, and contribute to our country every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">State Rep. Angie Nixon, a candidate for U.S. Senate, called it \u201ca catastrophic decision\u201d and pointed the finger at incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody for not acting to stop it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFlorida has the most people under temporary protected status in the country,\u201d Nixon said. \u201cThis doesn\u2019t just affect immigration policy; this puts millions of lives into a state of uncertainty and fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miami-Dade Commissioner Marleine Bastien, who for years ran a nonprofit to assist members of the county\u2019s Haitian community, said the impacts of the decision \u201cwill be felt far beyond the Haitian community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThese individuals are not strangers \u2014 they are our friends, neighbors, coworkers, healthcare workers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and essential members of our communities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHundreds of thousands of jobs could be left vacant across critical industries, including healthcare, hospitality, construction, manufacturing, and business services. The loss of these workers will create a ripple effect and there will be serious economic challenges for communities and employees. What makes this decision even more troubling is that Haiti remains in a state of crisis. No one should be forced to return to a country still facing extreme violence, instability, and humanitarian hardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert, a candidate for Florida\u2019s 24th Congressional District, described Trump\u2019s motivation for seeking the change patently racist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c350,000 Haitians. 6,100 Syrians. They\u2019ve lived here, worked here, built lives here,\u201d he said. \u201cJustice Kagan got it right. The President\u2019s own words \u2018fairly shout\u2019 of racial hostility. We all heard them. We know what they meant. In FL 24, Haitian families are our neighbors, our coworkers, our friends. They\u2019re part of us. They always will be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former Broward County Mayor Dale Holness, a candidate for Florida\u2019s 20th Congressional District, called the decision both \u201clegally reckless\u201d and \u201cmorally bankrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe six Justices in the majority have turned their backs on a people who are suffering unimaginably, and in doing so, they have dishonored the very history of this nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former U.S. Rep. David Jolly, a candidate for Governor, offered emotional support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur hearts go out to the people of Venezuela this morning and those here in Florida who call it home or have family still in (the) country,\u201d he said, urging Trump\u2019s administration to ensure that TPS remains available to Venezuelans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Richard Lamondin, a candidate for Senate District 38, took aim at the weaponization of immigration enforcement at the local level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is Miami. We are a city built by immigrants who came here fleeing the exact government overreach that we are discussing today,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you turn our local police into federal immigration agents, you don\u2019t make this city safer. You make every resident less safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Elijah Manley, a candidate for CD 20 framed the issue in economic terms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Supreme Court just gave Trump the green light to deport 350,000+ hardworking Haitians,\u201d he said, \u201cpeople who pour billions into our economy every year, staffing hospitals, schools, and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. Senate candidate Alex Vindman bashed the ruling as \u201ca broken promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThousands of Haitians, Venezuelans and other immigrant communities have built lives and contributed to our communities here in Florida while waiting for conditions to improve back home before they return,\u201d he said. \u201cFor many, those conditions remain unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">___<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Material from The Associated Press was used in this report.
