During a time of racial segregation, many of the artists were unable to display their work in traditional galleries. Instead, they sold their paintings door-to-door and along highways across South Florida.According to America 250 Florida Roadtrip organizers, the Highwaymen are considered America’s “last great folk art movement” because of their influence on art and their determination to succeed despite the barriers they faced.The Florida Highwaymen Museum is the only museum in the country dedicated to showcasing the legacy of all 26 original Florida Highwaymen artists.
