Skies start to clear after days of blazing brush fire throughout over 20,000<\/a> acres of land in West Miami-Dade and air quality alerts come to a halt Thursday, June 25.<\/p>\n

The first fires broke out last Friday, June 19, closing Florida Turnpike southbound lanes from Okeechobee Road\/U.S. 27 to Northwest 41st Street and Krome Avenue, disrupting many FIU commuters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a little distracting because you would want to look at where everything\u2019s going,\u201d said FIU sophomore and commuter, Madison Martin.<\/p>\n

Martin explained that traffic between work and class was heavy when driving through the back streets.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn general, you could see the smoke in the air, you could see the ashes, you could smell it too. It was everywhere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Martin, also a member of FIU\u2019s color guard team, explained that videos and photos of the brush fires were being shared in the team\u2019s group chat from different perspectives.<\/p>\n

Throughout the week, FIU kept students, faculty, and staff on campus updated about traffic conditions and limited outdoor activity by email and on social media platforms.<\/p>\n

For South Florida residents a week of summer has been hazy skies and ashes.<\/p>\n

The heavy rainfall on Saturday, June 20, helped speed up the efforts to put out the fires.<\/p>\n

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue<\/a>, as of Thursday, June 25, units have cleared the scene and the Florida Forest Service is still monitoring conditions.<\/p>\n
