VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. \u2013 Volusia County deputies have revealed that an Orlando father is now facing an even more serious charge after his infant son died years after being critically injured.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the charge can be traced back to 2023, when the man \u2014 identified as Malcolm Nelson, 34 \u2014 shook his baby boy while the family was at their Ormond Beach home, leaving the child with life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n
According to a charging affidavit, the baby \u2014 who was only 3 months old at the time \u2014 had been taken to the hospital the night before for vomiting. The next morning, he was found \u201climp and unresponsive,\u201d deputies said.<\/p>\n
At the hospital, doctors determined that the baby had suffered a brain bleed, which led to a seizure and cardiac arrest, deputies explained. They added that the child\u2019s heart stopped for about 16 minutes, and he was left on life support.<\/p>\n
Investigators also reported that the baby had other injuries, including bone fractures at different stages of healing \u2014 indicating he had been hurt before.<\/p>\n
Nelson was originally arrested later that year and charged with aggravated child abuse, a charge to which he pleaded no contest and was sentenced in June 2025, the sheriff\u2019s office noted.<\/p>\n
