The sheriff’s office had not included this detail in its statement on Miller’s death two days earlier, though many online claims did.<\/p>\n It was unclear whether Miller’s next of kin would seek an independent autopsy. Snopes readers contacted us, asking about the circumstances around Miller’s death.<\/p>\n According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Miller appeared to have died by suicide. Major Vernon L. Williams repeated that Miller’s death was not a result of foul play during a June 26 news conference<\/a> (at 10:05). The Sheriff’s Office did not say that Miller was found hanging from a tree, as some posts said. Tania Francois, a reporter for Miami CBS affiliate WFOR, reported<\/a> that Miller was found in Gwen Cherry Park.<\/p>\n During the June 26 news conference<\/a>, Terri Miller, Miller’s sister, staunchly rejected the conclusion that Miller’s death was a suicide. Terri Miller said (at 15:51), “My sister was a beautiful human that loved life and would not d*mn sure take her own.” Miller also addressed “crap” on social media, denying claims that her sister had traveled to Miami for Juneteenth or that her death was necessarily tied to race.<\/p>\n Because the claim that Miller died by lynching was unproven, we leave this claim unrated.<\/p>\n We contacted Terri Miller to ask if the family would seek an independent autopsy and await a reply to our query.<\/p>\n The Miami-Dade County medical examiner’s office could not release the results of its investigation into Miller’s death because autopsy reports in Florida for people who are found to have died by suicide<\/a> are exempt from public-records requests without permission from the next of kin.<\/p>\n According to the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, lynching<\/a> is a term that describes violent acts carried out by white people against Black people in the South in the 19th and early 20th centuries.<\/p>\n Such violent actions included hanging Black men and women from trees. The NAACP’s Miami-Dade branch said<\/a> (archived<\/a>) on June 26 Miller was “found dead hanging from a tree.” Snopes asked the branch president how they knew this and await a reply.<\/p>\n Miller didn’t travel to Miami for Juneteenth<\/p>\n Claims online said Miller had traveled to Miami to celebrate Juneteenth when she died. This did not appear to be the case. Terri Miller said during the June 26 news conference that her sister had been in Miami since February 2026.<\/p>\n Mistress Mei, the co-founder of Decrim305, an organization that advocates for the decriminalization of sex work, said in a video<\/a> posted to Instagram on June 26 that Tonea Miller was “one of our participants \u2014 as in, we provided services to her.”<\/p>\n She also said Miller’s sister was seeking an independent autopsy. Snopes could not independently verify that claim.<\/p>\n According to an arrest affidavit, a Miami police officer arrested<\/a> Miller in February 2025, supporting claims she was already in Miami before Juneteenth 2026.
