An AI data center planned just 15 minutes from FIU<\/a> is raising questions about what the project could mean for students and the surrounding community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Metrobloks<\/a> is developing a proposed 15.2-megawatt data center at 500 NW 137th Ave., designed to power artificial intelligence (AI). As companies continue investing in AI, projects like this are becoming more common across the country, bringing new conversations about energy use, water consumption, and how these facilities fit into nearby communities.<\/p>\n

Despite how close the project is to FIU, there hasn\u2019t been much information shared on it. In fact, two students interviewed by PantherNOW said they had never heard about it before.<\/p>\n

A senior in Digital Communication and Media, Dylan Teboe, said he was surprised to learn a data center was planned so close to campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think the public is being informed enough,\u201d Teboe said. \u201cI go to FIU and I\u2019ve never heard about this until today.\u201d<\/p>\n

As someone studying digital media, Teboe said AI has already changed how people create and share content online. He said AI-generated videos and images have improved so quickly that it can be difficult to tell what\u2019s real, sharing that he\u2019s been fooled by AI content before.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always thought of AI-generated video as something to worry about in the future, but it\u2019s already had dramatic effects on what I see on social media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

While Teboe said he occasionally uses AI to help with research, he said understanding the amount of infrastructure needed to support the technology has changed the way he thinks about using it; he added that learning more about the data centers powering AI has made him more cautious about relying on it.<\/p>\n

Another senior and Environmental Science major, Marcela Diaz, has raised concerns about projects like this and emphasized that they deserve close attention because of their potential impact on wildlife, water resources and nearby neighborhoods. She said South Florida\u2019s environment is especially sensitive because of its ecosystems like the wetlands and marshes.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlorida and the Everglades specifically are very, very delicate environments,\u201d Diaz said.<\/p>\n

She said she hopes environmental questions are thoroughly examined before the project moves forward, including how nearby communities and local ecosystems could be affected over time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat will happen to the wildlife around it? What will happen to the people around it?\u201d Diaz asked. She said questions like these need to be asked before a major project like this moves forward.<\/p>\n

According to Consumer Reports<\/a>, data centers are essentially large buildings filled with thousands of servers that store and process information. AI programs require much more computing power than traditional internet services, which means these facilities also need large amounts of electricity and cooling to keep equipment from overheating.<\/p>\n

With construction expected to continue, the proposed AI data center is likely to remain part of a growing conversation about AI\u2019s expansion and its impact on surrounding communities.<\/p>\n
