Cape Coral asks Department of Government Efficiency for deadline extension over spending records<\/p>\n

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is investigating Cape Coral\u2019s fiscal spending and requested detailed records from the city for the years 2024, 2025, and 2026, with a final deadline set for June 25. <\/p>\n

Charles Warnick, a Cape Coral resident, shared his thoughts on the investigation. \u201cThe ordinary citizen has no real means to go about to find out what’s what’s happening. So dodge, I guess, is a good thing,\u201d Warnick said. <\/p>\n

DOGE\u2019s inquiry<\/a> focuses on what it calls wasteful spending, including emergency purchases, sole-source contracts, cooperative purchasing agreements, and purchase orders. The agency has requested records beyond those approved by the city council. <\/p>\n

Frankie Tedesco, another Cape Coral resident, expressed his perspective on the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow I’m not pointing my finger at anyone in particular. However, you’re dealing with humans. So, as a taxpayer, I don’t really have control over that. I hope, whatever they’re investigating, they can come to some conclusion and find out what’s going on,\u201d Tedesco said. <\/p>\n

Warnick also emphasized the need for oversight in local government spending. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey should be looking this way to keep local government on the up and up. Because the money will sometimes just disappear in the pockets of good old boys or friends or accomplices in some cases, shall we say. Look at the federal government. That’s a big financial turkey to be plucked. It seems to me a lot of money just vanishes,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Tedesco acknowledged the city\u2019s position in the investigation. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou got to pick someone. Some city. So, we’re just the unlucky ones that are getting the publicity and the spotlight. So, we’ll see what happens,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

DOGE initially set a deadline of June 9 for the submission of records but later extended it to June 25 after the city requested more time. Cape Coral residents have been pressing the city council for transparency regarding recent developments and decisions. <\/p>\n

As of now, it remains unclear whether the city met DOGE\u2019s deadline. Both city officials and DOGE have yet to respond to inquiries for clarification.<\/p>\n
