TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Children living with Type 1 diabetes are taking part in a one-day STEM camp Wednesday at the Challenger Learning Center.<\/p>\n
Hosted in partnership with the TMH Foundation, the camp includes IMAX films, robotics activities and lessons about how insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors work.<\/p>\n
Education Manager Jordan Hall said the camp was created to provide a space for children with Type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n
\u201cCampers with Type 1 diabetes traditionally may not go to camp because of the things they\u2019re dealing with from day to day,\u201d Hall said. \u201cOur goal is to provide a safe, inclusive learning environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hall said a priority is to give campers the same opportunities to learn, explore and connect with peers while helping them better understand the science behind the medical technology they rely on.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s taking their everyday experiences and being around like-minded campers and children that have to deal with the same things they are dealing with and managing,\u201d Hall said. \u201cThey\u2019re also learning how to do these hands-on activities through the things they identify with and understand the most.\u201d<\/p>\n
Organizers said this is the first \u2018T1D\u2019 STEM camp hosted at the Challenger Learning Center, and they hope to make it a recurring event.<\/p>\n
