The trial by jury is an enduring legacy of the Declaration of Independence as the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary Saturday. Florida Court Clerks and Comptrollers (FCCC<\/a>) are commemorating the semiquincentennial by highlighting their oversight of that crucial component of what it means to be American.<\/p>\n

The 67 Florida Clerks of Court are engaged in a public awareness campaign<\/a> this year reminding residents of the important role that courts play.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs our nation celebrates 250 years of independence, we are reminded that the right to trial by jury was one of the central tenets for which our founders fought,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0FCCC President and Marion County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller Gregory C. Harrell.<\/p>\n

\u201cJury service remains one of the most important duties entrusted to citizens. Every day, Florida\u2019s Clerks of Court help ensure our residents can fulfill this responsibility and that the constitutional promise of equal protection under the law remains strong for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

An FCCC news release pointed out that court services were among the chief concerns by American colonists. The Declaration of Independence accused King George III of \u201cdepriving us in many cases of the benefits of trial by jury.\u201d That ideal is enshrined in the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n

While Clerks of Court maintain courthouses to ensure fair trials, they also are in charge of the complex task of assembling juries, which consist of residents who are registered voters. Courts seek \u201cmembers of the community applying the law fairly and impartially.\u201d<\/p>\n

That involves summoning qualified jurors, overseeing jury selection, administering information and assistance to jurors, managing juror attendance and compensation, and monitoring jury selection to make sure it is fair and efficient.<\/p>\n

The FCCC reminds residents that serving on a jury ensures direct citizen participation in a system that is founded on self-government.<\/p>\n
