Nicci Gilbert has officially stepped into the \u201cSpend Dat\u201d debate, and the Brownstone<\/a> singer is not treating Yung Miami\u2019s<\/a> viral record like harmless background noise.<\/p>\n

On a recent episode of Diary of a Diva<\/a>, Gilbert broke down why the song has been getting under her skin, turning the conversation from a trending single into a bigger argument about R&B, hip-hop, influence, and what gets pushed into the culture.<\/p>\n

Gilbert made it clear that her issue is with the song\u2019s content. \u201cCaresha is beautiful,\u201d Gilbert said, adding that she thinks the rapper has \u201ca fun personality.\u201d But when it comes to the song itself, Gilbert did not soften the message: \u201cI hate the song.\u201d She said that seeing young kids dancing to the track made the moment feel more serious than just another viral hook.<\/p>\n

Brownstone broke through in the mid-1990s with \u201cIf You Love Me,\u201d a Grammy-nominated hit rooted in the era\u2019s vocal-heavy, emotion-forward sound. Gilbert has also worked across TV, stage, and unscripted projects, including R&B Divas: Atlanta, where the legacy of \u201990s R&B was part of the show\u2019s foundation. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe lyrical content is witchcraft in my opinion,\u201d Gilbert said, before clarifying that she was talking about \u201cconditioning.\u201d She pointed to repetition, chants, and hooks as part of what makes music powerful, saying, \u201cMusic is the soundtrack of our lives. Music will inspire us to do the very worst things. Music will inspire us to do the very best things.\u201d<\/p>\n

The backlash around \u201cSpend Dat\u201d has already pulled in other R&B voices. India.Arie recently criticized the \u201cmass acceptance\u201d of the song after a Threads user called for a boycott, writing that \u201ceverything you listen to, see or eat is going to influence you\u201d and urging people to \u201cmake wise choices.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n
