(CBS12) — A towering symbol of patriotism is rising over a Florida coastal community just in time for the Fourth of July.

The tallest free-standing American flagpole in Florida now stands 250 feet tall. It will officially fly its first American flag during an Independence Day ceremony Saturday afternoon at Bernice Braden Park.

Cape Coral officials say the flagpole, located near the foot of the Cape Coral Bridge, was completed after weeks of construction and funded entirely through community donations. According to the city, more than $300,000 was raised through residents, businesses and community partners, with Michael Ilczyszyn leading the fundraising effort.

Officials say the “Raise the Flag” campaign was launched to commemorate America’s 250th birthday and create a lasting symbol of freedom, democracy and unity for Southwest Florida.

See also: Project Tango setback: Palm Beach County zoning board recommends denial

This isn’t just about a flagpole; it’s about showing how much we care about our country, our freedoms, and each other,” Ilcysxyn said in a statement. “It’s up to all of us to unify and get it done for our community and Southwest Florida.”

The city announced the inaugural flag-raising ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday and is free and open to the public.

For many residents, the towering display is already becoming a new landmark.

“As far as the staple here to be a part of our community in the city, I think it’s a great entrance and a nice focal point coming over the bridge,” Cape Coral resident David Rojas told Gulf Coast News Now.

Not everyone is convinced the project is worth celebrating.

“It’s kind of a joke,” resident Greg Crosbie told the news outlet. “Also, nobody talks about the cost of maintenance. And what’s the cost of the actual flag? And how often are you going to have to change the flag and who’s going to pay for it? And I think there’s so much better projects that the city could spend that money on to help the people of Cape Coral.”

Still, city officials say the completed project represents the success of a community-driven effort and hope it will become a source of pride for generations to come as Americans celebrate both Independence Day and the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

CAPE CORAL, Fla.
