Hundreds gathered in Indian Harbour Beach on July 3 to watch as officials unearthed and opened a time capsule buried in 1976 during America’s Bicentennial celebrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The plan had always been to open it when America turns 250.<\/a><\/p>\n

About a half-inch of water had seeped into the capsule, a concrete box, over the years. But it still revealed a treasure trove from 50 years ago. Boy Scout Troop 309 got the first look at the contents.<\/p>\n

Officials pulled out a July 4, 1976, edition of the TODAY newspaper (the precursor to FLORIDA TODAY), a Time magazine, along with photos, cassette tapes, patches and personal items. Also inside was a U.S. flag, which officials gently wiped off.<\/p>\n
