A mix of island activities are planned to celebrate this year\u2019s Fourth of July and America\u2019s 250th.<\/p>\n
On July 4, the bigger ones will include the Annual Independence Day Parade on Periwinkle Way and city of Sanibel\u2019s Stars, Stripes & Sanibel Community Celebration at the Sanibel Recreation Center.<\/p>\n
Also on the islands, there will be a pancake breakfast, a community celebration, an in-vehicle scavenger hunt and a jazz concert, with the day wrapping up with a spectacular fireworks display.<\/p>\n
Annual Independence Day Parade<\/p>\n
The Annual Independence Day Parade will kick off at 9:30 a.m. on Sanibel.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity for the community to come together and show their community spirit, especially this year with America\u2019s anniversary, it\u2019s 250th year of independence,\u201d Trish Phillips, president of the Friends of Don \u2014 the volunteer group that organizes the event \u2014 said.<\/p>\n
In honor of the milestone, this year\u2019s theme is \u201cAmerica 250.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to emphasize some of the local military officers in the parade this year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The route will begin at the corner of Tarpon Bay Road and Periwinkle Way, and then travel east to Casa Ybel Road. Roads along the parade route will close at 9 a.m., so people should plan their travel accordingly. The roads will reopen at the conclusion of the parade, which will be at about 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo secure their spot,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBring a beach chair, plenty of water, sunscreen and, of course, bug spray,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
The parade floats have been known to toss out items.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s going to happen,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cYou may want to bring a take-home bag for all the goodies that you may collect during the parade.\u201d<\/p>\n
Forty-four floats took part in last year\u2019s parade, which also entails a contest for: Best Float \u2014 Commercial, Best Float \u2014 Not-For-Profit, Most Patriotic, Best Original Design and Best Music.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have several new entries this year,\u201d she said. \u201cWe anticipate reaching that same number, if not more.\u201d<\/p>\n
The winner in each category will be recognized.<\/p>\n
\u201cBragging rights, along with a plaque for proof,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s event sponsors are the city, Bank of the Islands and Bondurant Family Team Kingfisher Real Estate.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe thank them for their support and for supporting the community,\u201d she said. \u201cWithout their support, this event may not take place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Parking will be available at the Periwinkle Place Shops, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ, Sanibel Community Church, Tahitian Gardens Shops, The Village Shops and Winds plaza.<\/p>\n
The public is invited to attend.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe celebrate island-style,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cCome and be part of our local community and see what we do on the Fourth of July.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 2026 parade shirts are available for $20 at Bank of the Islands, at 1699 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. Any leftover ones will be sold along the parade route, with the proceeds to fund next year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n

Stars, Stripes & Sanibel Community Celebration<\/p>\n
Sponsored by the city, the Stars, Stripes & Sanibel Community Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the rec center. With activities for all ages, it has become a signature holiday tradition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rec center on July 4 is designed for a family-friendly event every year,\u201d Recreation Department Marketing & Events Coordinator Denise Dillon said, adding that the celebration is free for all.<\/p>\n
This year, the city is incorporating some new features.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the 250th birthday of the United States,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
There will be the Red, White And Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause nothing is more American than a good old apple pie on July 4,\u201d Dillon said. \u201cAnd we have so many great bakers on the islands.\u201d<\/p>\n
A panel of three or four judges will test and score the pie entries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve limited the contest to 12 bakers who will fight for the right to win the first annual event,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The popular water balloon battle against members of the Sanibel Fire and Rescue District will return. At 12:20 p.m., grades K-3 will have the chance to win the water war, then grades 4-8 at 12:45 p.m.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are thankful that the firefighters step up every year to fill thousands of water balloons that the kids can then throw at them, as well as their parents,\u201d Dillon said. \u201cIt\u2019s an important tradition that we love to continue working with the fire district on.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just a great way to bring the community together, big kids and little kids, alike,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
There will be four inflatables to test out, including a new basketball-themed one.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will be returning with a gym full of larger-than-life inflatables,\u201d Dillon said. \u201cSome of the inflatables are interactive game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Attendees can also partake in yard games.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will have the larger-sized Jenga, Connect 4,\u201d she said, adding that there will be Plinko and cornhole. \u201cWe will have enough to keep everyone busy for the entire time, rain or shine.\u201d<\/p>\n
Community partners will offer activity tables, and the \u201cDing\u201d Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS) will have show-and-tell items from the J.N. \u201cDing\u201d Darling National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n
\u201cCrafts and activities themed around July 4 and America\u2019s 250th,\u201d Dillon said.<\/p>\n
There will be face painting for the youths.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will have a photo booth this year, so that\u2019s a new component to this event,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
All of the rec center\u2019s pools will be open, with lifeguards on duty.<\/p>\n
Attendees can enjoy complimentary hot dogs, chips and water, as well as ice cream and cupcakes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlong with apple pie, nothing is more American than hot dogs on July 4,\u201d Dillon said. \u201cWe will be singing \u2018Happy Birthday\u2019 to America with the 500 cupcakes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Best Bee Brothers will provide no-see-um spray to keep everyone comfortable.<\/p>\n
Additional event supporters this year include: A Bit of Bailey\u2019s, A Little Adventure, Bank of the Islands, Big D\u2019s BBQ, DDWS, Jerry\u2019s Foods, Pinocchio\u2019s Original Italian Ice Cream, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Sanibel Captiva Community Bank, Sanibel-Captiva Islander and Island Reporter, and Sanibel Tropics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis event, above all of the events that the city sponsors, focuses on the true meaning of what community is on Sanibel and this year, with it being America\u2019s 250th, community is more important than ever,\u201d Dillon said.<\/p>\n

Fireworks display<\/p>\n
The city of Sanibel\u2019s fireworks will launch at about 9 p.m. from the north end of Bailey Road.<\/p>\n
The site will not be open to the public, and the show is subject to weather conditions.<\/p>\n
The display can be viewed from numerous locations, including the Sanibel Causeway Islands and bayside beaches on the islands, as well as vessels in the San Carlos Bay.<\/p>\n
No roadside or illegal parking will be permitted on Sanibel.<\/p>\n
In addition, the public is reminded that no other fireworks are permitted within the city limits. An ordinance, which is in effect year-round, prohibits the possession of or firing off of fireworks.<\/p>\n
