The Yankees arrive 49-40 after losing nine of 10 and 12 of their last 15. They have been outscored 86-41 across that 15-game slide. Tampa has already taken four of five in the season series and owns a 31-12 home record. The Rays also enter with an 8-2 record over their last 10, a .274 team average, and a 2.56 ERA in that span. New York sits 1-9 over its last 10, with a .155 average and a 3.94 ERA. That creates the cleanest full-game split: Schlittler gives New York a starter advantage, while Tampa owns almost everything around the mound. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Schlittler deserves the first hard look because he is New York’s strongest argument. He enters 8-5 with a 2.08 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 104 innings, 79 hits, 123 strikeouts, 21 walks, and 10 homers allowed. His contact profile supports the dominance: .241 wOBA, .259 expected wOBA, 87.6 mph average exit velocity, 38.5% hard-hit rate, and 6.3% barrel rate allowed. The arsenal is power-heavy and difficult to square. He throws 44.5% four-seamers, 26.6% cutters, 20.3% sinkers, 6.6% curveballs, and only 1.9% sliders. The recent crack still gives Tampa an opening. Schlittler has allowed 10 runs over his last two starts after carrying a 1.50 ERA through his first 12.

Jax is the counterweight, and his profile carries more danger. He enters 4-5 with a 3.45 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 60 innings, 56 hits, 58 strikeouts, 20 walks, and 11 homers allowed. His expected contact gives New York a credible path: .324 wOBA, .353 expected wOBA, 88.3 mph average exit velocity, 40.8% hard-hit rate, and 10.5% barrel rate allowed. His pitch mix has starter depth, though. Jax throws 24.9% sweepers, 21.5% changeups, 20.7% sinkers, 17.9% four-seamers, 8.4% curveballs, and 6.7% cutters. The changeup is important against New York’s left-handed bats. It gives him a softer weapon beneath the 95-96 mph sinker/four-seam pair.

Tampa’s offense has fewer homers than New York, but it has better current functionality. The Yankees own 128 homers, 427 runs, a .235 average, .318 OBP, and .419 slugging mark. Tampa owns 84 homers, 396 runs, 751 hits, a .259 average, .337 OBP, and .397 slugging mark. The Yankees have more raw thunder. The Rays have more traffic, fewer empty plate appearances, and a stronger current top-half chain. Yandy Díaz is the on-base engine at .325/.408/.495 with a .904 OPS, 12 homers, 53 RBI, 37 walks, and 46 runs. Jonathan Aranda adds the left-handed bridge with 58 RBI and another high-OBP look. Junior Caminero is the eruption point with 25-plus homers, a .934 OPS, and full All-Star momentum.

Yankees vs. Rays pick, best bet

Tampa’s late-game structure is easier to trust. Bryan Baker has turned into a legitimate ninth-inning separator with a 1.83 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 37 strikeouts, 11 walks, and 23 saves across 34.1 innings. He has converted 23 of 26 save chances and worked a perfect ninth on eight pitches Friday. Tampa also got 3 2/3 perfect relief innings in that 3-1 Houston win, with Baker closing it. The Tropicana Field setting removes wind and heat volatility, so the game leans into pitching, defense, contact quality, and late-inning execution. That favors the team with the healthier core and more stable finishing lane.

The under 7.5 fits the controlled environment, but -122 is too expensive for a game with Jax’s 10.5% barrel rate. Yankees team total under 3.5 is a strong angle, given the injuries and offensive slide. Rays ML tells the whole game better. It captures Tampa’s 31-12 home record, 4-1 season-series edge, healthier top half, Díaz-Aranda-Caminero pressure, and Baker’s ninth-inning advantage. Rays F5 asks Tampa to beat Schlittler before the bullpen and defense layers arrive. Yankees ML leans too heavily on one starter while ignoring the damaged team state.

Best bet: Rays ML (-115), playable to -120.

Projected score: Rays 4, Yankees 2.

Best bet: Rays (-115) vs. Yankees

Tail it with me in the DKN Betting Group here!

Tampa Bay opens this four-game AL East set at 52-35, four games clear of New York.
