FELLSMERE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 A major development is set to transform the small city of Fellsmere into a surfing destination, promising a significant boost to the local economy. <\/p>\n
The Point Surf Park, a $30 million project, will be built on the site of the former Mesa Park, which has been vacant for 20 years.<\/p>\n
Developer Luiz de Araujo shared that the park will feature a 700-foot artificial wave pool capable of creating waves for all skill levels, from beginners to professional surfers. “All the surfers, of course, are going crazy,” de Araujo said. “It’s about 100 surfers knocking on the door every day, ‘is it ready yet?’ ‘No, it’s not ready yet. Hang on, we’re working on it!'” <\/p>\n
The park will also offer amenities such as jacuzzis, common areas, and food stands.<\/p>\n
“In between sessions, you can relax and enjoy,” de Araujo added. <\/p>\n
Fellsmere’s Community Development Director Robert Loring expressed excitement about repurposing the old site, saying, “This is a really nice fit for us. The fact that we\u2019re repurposing old buildings and site for something new is really exciting for our department.” <\/p>\n
The project is expected to generate an additional $8 to $12 million for the city. <\/p>\n
De Araujo has committed to hiring local workers, including construction crews. <\/p>\n
Loring noted, “It’s really a miracle for the community. We\u2019ve been kind of bumping along for a long time, and we feel like this kind of venue will be a real economic generator for the community and our residents.” <\/p>\n
While the community reaction has been mixed, with concerns about traffic, Loring assured that traffic surveys have been conducted and there are no concerns. <\/p>\n
