Taylor Swift had a plagiarism lawsuit filed against her by a Florida poet dismissed with prejudice.<\/p>\n

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the lawsuit filed by poet Kimberly Marasco, which alleged that Swift, Aaron Dessner, Republic Records and Universal Music Group copied portions of her poems and used them in several of the pop star\u2019s songs. Cannon disagreed, dismissing Marasco\u2019s claims and writing that \u201cnone of plaintiff\u2019s twelve counts identifies any protected expression.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Court concludes that Plaintiff\u2019s poems do not contain protectable expression and that, regardless, Plaintiff has failed to plausibly plead copying,\u201d the document issuing the dismissal read.<\/p>\n

The document added: \u201cBasic ideas and themes (a woman working in a corporate environment, being \u2018gaslighted,\u2019 confronting adversity); ubiquitous metaphors (being \u2018submerged\u2019 under water, \u2018tears as weapons,\u2019 \u2018desire as fuel and fire,\u2019 becoming \u2018the rain\/storm\u2019); and isolated common words and short phrases (\u2018tears,\u2019 \u2018running,\u2019 \u2018fire,\u2019 \u2018rain,\u2019 \u2018sky,\u2019 \u2018love,\u2019 \u2018invisible,\u2019 \u2018caged me,\u2019 \u2018flesh and blood,\u2019 \u2018it\u2019s time to go\u2019). As this Court already explained in that related case, such content amount[s] at most to ideas, metaphors, contexts, and themes \u2013 none of which is a proper subject of copyright protection.\u201d<\/p>\n

The federal judge permanently dismissed the poet\u2019s lawsuit and further noted in the ruling that it \u201cclosely mirrors\u201d a previous complaint Marasco filed before later amending it to target Swift. Swift\u2019s legal team argued that Marasco\u2019s plagiarism filings amounted to \u201cshotgun pleading,\u201d and the judge agreed, particularly after reviewing the amended complaint.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Second Amended Complaint likely qualifies as a shotgun pleading because it \u2018assert[s] multiple claims against multiple defendants without specifying which of the defendants are responsible for which acts or omissions,\u2019\u201d the document added.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s turning out to be a good week for Swift. On top of putting the 14-month legal dispute behind her, she also celebrated her wedding. On Friday, she married her longtime boyfriend Travis Kelce. The pair did it in style, reportedly renting out Madison Square Garden for the event and turning it into a who\u2019s who of celebrities. Adam Sandler even officiated the proceedings, which remain largely a mystery to the public.<\/p>\n
