Coming from a room full of journalists, we mean that sincerely.<\/p>\n However, even the most numerically challenged among us knows that America turned 250 over the weekend \u2014 not 200.<\/p>\n On Saturday night, the city hosted a massive July 4 event to commemorate America\u2019s 250th birthday. The gathering \u2014 named \u201c250 United: America\u2019s 250th Celebration\u201d <\/a>\u2014 featured food vendors, FIFA World Cup match viewing, and performances from Ashanti and Ja Rule, Shaggy, and Willy Chirino. We are celebrating the semiquincentennial.\u201d<\/p>\n Oops!<\/p>\n \u201cThis kind of shit is why people say Miami is not a serious city. Embarrassing af,\u201d one person responded<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cMiami at a new low for history \u2013 and intelligence? How can they bungle this American milestone. Uggh!!\u201d another replied<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cAy, que pena\u2026.you had one job,\u201d another quipped<\/a>. <\/p>\n The event was hosted by the Bayfront Park Management Trust, which oversees Bayfront Park and Maurice Ferr\u00e9 Park in downtown Miami. Miami District 1 Commissioner Miguel Gabela<\/a> is the chair of the trust. <\/p>\n Neither Gabela nor a city spokesperson responded to New Times\u2018 request for comment via email about the drone show mishap.<\/p>\n For the record, Miami did celebrate the bicentennial\u202650 years ago. In 1976, the city marked America\u2019s 200th birthday by converting part of the downtown waterfront<\/a> into a green space, complete with a 350-member interdenominational chorus singing \u201cOne Nation Under God.\u201d The park, initially named Bicentennial Park, is known today as Maurice A. Ferr\u00e9 Park, named in honor of Miami\u2019s first Hispanic mayor.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
