THIS MORNING, ORLANDO IS STARTING WORK THEY HOPE WILL BRING CHURCH STREET BACK TO ITS FORMER GLORY. NANCY WE OF COURSE, TALKING ABOUT THE AREA AROUND CHURCH STREET STATION AND THIS MORNING WESH TWO BOB HAZEN IS THERE LIVE FOR US BOB. THE CITY WANTS TO MAKE IT A BETTER PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO WALK AND ALSO JUST HANG OUT. YEAH, IT\u2019S REALLY A SHELL OF WHAT IT USED TO BE. THERE ARE A LOT OF EMPTY STOREFRONT RESTAURANT FRONTS HERE ALONG CHURCH STREET, AND THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO TRY TO REVERSE THAT AND GIVE PEOPLE A REASON TO COME BACK DOWN HERE. I WANT TO SHOW YOU A PICTURE OF WHAT OFFICIALS THINK IT WILL LOOK LIKE WHEN THIS PROJECT IS DONE. THEY WANT CHURCH STREET HERE IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN TO BE A FESTIVAL STREET WITH OUTDOOR DINING AND YEAR ROUND EVENTS. BACK IN THE DAY, CHURCH STREET STATION WAS A VERY BUSY PLACE. IT HAD THE CHEYENNE SALOON. ROSIE O\u2019GRADY\u2019S GOOD TIME EMPORIUM, THE TERROR ON CHURCH STREET. EVEN MORE RECENTLY, HAMBURGER MARY\u2019S WAS DOWN HERE, BUT NOW ALMOST ALL THE BUILDINGS ARE EMPTY AND THERE\u2019S A FOOD HALL THAT\u2019S BEEN LONG PLANNED BUT STILL HAS NOT OPEN. THE CITY WANTS TO RENOVATE THE STREET. THEY\u2019RE DOING THIS IN PHASES. TODAY IS THE START OF PHASE ONE. IT\u2019S BETWEEN GARLAND AND THE RAILROAD TRACKS, AND CREWS WILL BE REPLACING THE BRICK STREET, GETTING RID OF THE CURB. SO IT\u2019S A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM THE STREET TO THE SIDEWALK. THEY\u2019LL ALSO BE PUTTING IN NEW LANDSCAPING. THE FINAL PHASE WILL INVOLVE TURNING THE PART OF CHURCH STREET BETWEEN ORANGE AND MAGNOLIA INTO A TWO WAY STREET, TO HELP BRING MORE CUSTOMERS TO BUSINESSES THERE. EVENTUALLY, ALL OF THAT WILL ALSO CONNECT TO THE CANOPY PROJECT, DESIGNED TO GO UNDER THE I-4 BRIDGES. WHENEVER THAT DOES FINALLY HAPPEN.
