TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A free summer camp in Leon County is giving teenagers a chance to build positive relationships while organizers work to prevent youth from becoming involved in crime.<\/p>\n
Thirty-six teens are participating in the second week of the Harmony in the Streets summer camp, a program for youth ages 13 to 17. It is hosted through a partnership between the Leon County Sheriff\u2019s Office, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches and the Council on the Status of Men and Boys.<\/p>\n
Royale King, executive director of the Council on the Status of Men and Boys, said organizers intentionally target middle and high school students because they often begin to see behavioral changes during the middle school years.<\/p>\n
\u201cNormally, the shift happens in middle school,\u201d King said. \u201cRight now, we\u2019re working on the step before the other side of the work that we do, where they end up incarcerated, whether it\u2019s juvenile or adult detention.\u201d<\/p>\n

The camp, held at the Ghazvini Learning Center, focuses on team-building activities, health and wellness and building relationships with peers and local law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n
King said another goal is to provide a safe, productive environment that helps keep teens engaged and on a positive path. \u201cThe summertime is normally the biggest opportunity for something to happen, it\u2019s a lot more idle time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Organizers also hope to remove financial barriers for families by offering the camp at no cost.<\/p>\n
