TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 This week, the Chamberlain High School Legacy Alliance is trying to solve a 70-year-old mystery: Was a time capsule buried beneath the school’s flagpole when the school was built?\u00a0<\/p>\n
The search comes as Chamberlain High School celebrates its 70th anniversary while also undergoing renovations.<\/p>\n
The CHS Legacy Alliance told 10 Tampa Bay News that, for years, stories have circulated among former students about a time capsule hidden in front of the school. Some alumni say they remember hearing about the burial, while others say they have never heard of it.<\/p>\n

“This search isn’t just about finding a box buried in the ground. It’s about uncovering a piece of Chamberlain’s history, especially poignant on the school’s 70th anniversary. If a time capsule is there, it’s a gift from the students who came before us. If it isn’t, the search has already accomplished something by bringing generations of alumni together to share memories and stories,” said Nancy Leach, vice chair of CHS Legacy Alliance.<\/p>\n
The timing of the search is tied to the school’s renovation project. The old concrete surrounding the flagpole has been removed, giving members of the Chamberlain High School Legacy Alliance a rare opportunity to investigate. Since last weekend, alumni have carefully searched the area where the time capsule was rumored to be buried, but so far, no capsule has been found.<\/p>\n
Artificial turf is expected to be installed later this week, which could close the window on the search.<\/p>\n
“Every school has legends, and for decades one of Chamberlain’s has been a time capsule beneath the flagpole. With the construction and school improvements happening now, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to find out whether it’s fact or folklore.”<\/p>\n
The CHS Legacy Alliance says members have searched school archives, including copies of The Chieftain student newspaper, but have not found any confirmation that a time capsule was buried.\u00a0<\/p>\n
