TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Even though the Tallahassee Reckoning have wrapped up their third season, behind the scenes, the real work is just getting started. <\/p>\n
Last week, the team teased a \u201clandmark announcement\u201d coming this Thursday, which could signal a new era.<\/p>\n
The details of the announcement are under wraps, but recent buzz around the team has been growing.<\/p>\n
Case in point, at the Reckoning\u2019s season finale at the end of June, soccer legend Crystal Dunn was on the sideline.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow many opportunities do you literally get to engage with a living legend, and not from afar, but talk to her and have those conversations and get that feedback and information,\u201d said Reckoning head coach Izzy Cotto.<\/p>\n
Beyond the star power, the excitement for this team is real. Players have begun to see more support in the stands.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe girls put so much into it,\u201d said team founder Ashlee Fontes. \u201cFor people to show up, it\u2019s the intangibles of \u2018we care, we appreciate what you\u2019re doing, we see you.\u2019 It\u2019s huge.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shining a spotlight on local talent is exactly why the Reckoning were founded.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s talent here in Tallahassee,\u201d said Fontes. \u201cThe girls need some love and support with those development resources and this is what can be done. So I\u2019m proud.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s that local focus that reconnected Dunn with the Fontes. The two crossed paths years ago with the Washington Spirit. Fontes drafted Dunn to the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cHer belief in me back then is what really forged this relationship,\u201d said Dunn. \u201cShe\u2019s somebody that\u2019s like \u2018hey Crystal, I\u2019ve got a project for you.\u2019 And I was like \u2018you know what? Let me learn a little more about Tallahassee.\u2019 And I\u2019m really happy I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued, \u201c[For the] Tallahassee Reckoning, it\u2019s really only the beginning. I\u2019m happy the girls are enjoying it but there\u2019s still so much work that has to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dunn, who retired in January, finally has the time to give back to the sport that\u2019s given her everything. <\/p>\n
\u201cCrystal\u2019s been finishing tying up her career and has been following along through the process. Timing is just now right,\u201d said Dunn.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe doesn\u2019t have to do this,\u201d said Cotto. \u201cThere\u2019s a million other things she could be doing. But she thinks to grow the women\u2019s game, it\u2019s important that she\u2019s in the grassroots and doing those things. We applaud her for that and we thank her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Whether Thursday\u2019s announcement is tied to Dunn or a separate step forward, the mission for the Reckoning remains the same.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll keep plugging away one game at a time. There\u2019s no limits to what we can actually do,\u201d said Fontes.<\/p>\n
