WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Dangerous heat remains the biggest weather story across South Florida today as a plume of Saharan dust helps suppress the usual summertime thunderstorm activity.<\/p>\n
A large mass of dry, dusty air from the Sahara Desert in North Africa has spread over the region, limiting cloud growth and reducing rain chances for much of the day. While a stray shower cannot be completely ruled out, most of South Florida is expected to stay dry under mostly sunny skies.<\/p>\n
The drier air won’t provide much relief from the heat. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the 90s, and humidity will push heat index values\u2014the “feels-like” temperature\u2014to between 105 and 110 degrees across the region. A Heat Advisory will be in effect for all of South Florida from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m., and residents are urged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, limit strenuous outdoor activities, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces or the shade.<\/p>\n
The Saharan dust may also create hazy skies and more vivid sunrises and sunsets, while helping hold thunderstorm development to a minimum today.<\/p>\n
The quieter weather won’t last long. As the dust plume begins to move away on Friday, moisture will increase across South Florida, allowing scattered thunderstorms to redevelop, especially across interior and Southwest Florida during the afternoon. Some storms could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.
