{"id":33439,"date":"2025-11-04T22:50:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T22:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/33439\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T22:50:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T22:50:14","slug":"with-a-little-help-from-friends-tampas-day-center-for-the-homeless-reopens-as-the-drop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/33439\/","title":{"rendered":"With a little help from friends, Tampa\u2019s Day Center for the Homeless reopens as \u2018The Drop\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Day Center for the Homeless reopened its doors Tuesday after closing this Summer amid funding cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Previously known colloquially as \u201cThe Shop,\u201d the Day Center is now reopening under a new brand, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellbuilt.city\/theshop\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The Drop<\/a>,\u201d complete with new community-led management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Located at 6220 North Nebraska Ave., the center has long provided mail access, showers, laundry and a welcoming place to rest for people without homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the center closed this Summer after losing federal funding, leaving hundreds without access to essential services they had come to rely upon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now, WellBuilt Cities, a Tampa-based nonprofit founded by social entrepreneur Jon Dengler, has joined forces with a coalition of churches, nonprofits and local supporters to preserve the site. The group raised more than $130,000 in just a few months \u2014 enough to take over the center\u2019s lease, refresh the space and prepare for reopening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hklaw.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-702884 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Florida_Politics_and_Influence_Magazine_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis reopening represents what\u2019s possible when a community comes together,\u201d Dengler said. \u201cNo single organization could have done this alone. Churches, volunteers, local businesses, and neighbors all stepped in because they knew this place matters \u2014 to the people it serves and to the city as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For now, The Drop will operate two days a week, offering showers, laundry, coffee, mail access, internet access and a place to rest. But plans are already underway to expand operations to five or six days a week as funding allows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new management team is also eying its long-term sustainability by exploring possible property acquisition and facility upgrades to transform the center into a community resilience hub that can serve daily community needs, known as \u201cblue sky\u201d and disaster response needs, known as \u201cgrey sky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under that model, the building would be used to coordinate volunteers and relief efforts during hurricanes and other local emergencies through the Respond Together network of churches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe chose the name The Drop because it captures both what we do and why we do it,\u201d Dengler explained. \u201cIt\u2019s short for drop-in center, but it also reminds us that small acts of love \u2014 the drop of coffee that starts your day, the drop of water that refreshes, or any \u2018drop\u2019 of hospitality \u2014 ripples outward into lasting change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allegiant360.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-678805 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Sunburn-Ad-728x90-1-e1718033295481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The name also draws inspiration from activist Dorothy Day, who wrote: \u201cPeople say, what is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time. A pebble cast into a pond causes ripples that spread in all directions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">While The Drop is now open, the new management team is still raising funds. Operations require at least $240,000 annually.
