{"id":33479,"date":"2025-11-04T23:18:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T23:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/33479\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T23:18:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T23:18:09","slug":"mockingbird-may-get-the-bird-as-lawmakers-flock-to-flamingo-scrub-jay-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/33479\/","title":{"rendered":"Mockingbird may get the bird as lawmakers flock to flamingo, scrub-jay bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida lawmakers are chirping again over whether it\u2019s time to give the state\u2019s bird lineup a makeover, and this year\u2019s proposal just might have wings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two identical bills (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/150\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">SB 150<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=82535\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">HB 11<\/a>) would crown the American flamingo as Florida\u2019s official state bird and the Florida scrub-jay as its official state songbird. That would knock the northern mockingbird off its perch after nearly 100 years in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">HB 11 landed first, filed Sept. 4 by Republican Reps. Jim Mooney of Islamorada and Chip LaMarca of Lighthouse Point. Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez of Doral joined the flock when she filed the Senate companion bill Oct. 9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee began pecking at the proposal Tuesday, and quickly gave the proposal a necessary nod of approval.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe flamingo is an iconic symbol of Florida, recognized worldwide for its striking appearance and unique behavior, its vibrant pink color and graceful stature embody the beauty and diversity of Florida\u2019s natural landscapes, particularly in the Everglades and coastal regions by designating the flamingo as the state bird,\u201d said Rodriguez, who chairs the committee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tgh.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tgh_42212_01_PoliticsSponsor_Banner_728x90_L4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-325032\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rodriguez spoke Tuesday while waving a flamingo shaped pen during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe flamingo, while not currently endangered, faces threats from habitat loss and climate change. By elevating its status to that of a state bird, we can raise awareness about the importance of protecting its habitat and ecosystems,\u201d she said. \u201cThis designation can serve as a catalyst for conservation initiatives, encouraging residents and visitors alike to engage in efforts to preserve Florida\u2019s natural beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mockingbird, Florida\u2019s reigning crooner since 1927, is famous for copying nearly any tune that catches its ear \u2014 car alarms, squeaky gates, even other birds. But critics say the mimic lacks Florida flair. After all, it\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/576443-hope-flutters-again-that-a-florida-native-will-be-designated-state-bird\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">moonlighting as the state bird for four other states<\/a>: Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For decades, lawmakers have tried to give the scrub-jay its moment in the sun. The bird has a uniquely Floridian claim: It\u2019s the only species found exclusively in the Sunshine State. Designating the scrub-jay as the state songbird not only honors this remarkable species, but also highlights the importance of preserving Florida\u2019s unique habitats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The flamingo, meanwhile, is the showoff in pink plumage, a bird that turns every skyline into a souvenir postcard. It <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/754798-should-floridas-state-bird-be-the-flamingo-or-scrub-jay-jim-mooney-says-both-in-refiled-bill\/#:~:text=The%20most%20prominent%20push%20came,food%20from%20other%20people&#039;s%20hands.\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">strutted into the conversation in December 2023<\/a>, and a 2024 attempt to make it the sole state bird fizzled out in committee that March. Advocates say the flamingo embodies Florida\u2019s brand: bright, tropical and just flamboyant enough to stand out in a crowd.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The debate also reflects a larger question of branding: Should Florida\u2019s emblem be endemic and understated, or iconic and instantly recognizable? If this new effort takes flight, Florida could wind up with a two-bird compromise \u2014 the flamingo for flash, the scrub-jay for state pride, while the mockingbird retired backstage.
