{"id":335089,"date":"2026-07-10T00:19:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T00:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/335089\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T00:19:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T00:19:11","slug":"ken-welch-never-quits-new-attack-ad-targets-charlie-crists-gubernatorial-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/335089\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Ken Welch never quits&#8217;: New attack ad targets Charlie Crist\u2019s gubernatorial record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A political committee backing St. Petersburg Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/ken-welch\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ken Welch<\/a> is going after <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/charlie-crist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Charlie Crist\u2019s<\/a> record as Governor in a new attack ad ahead of the Aug. 18 Primary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">St. Petersburg Progress announced that the ad, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2E0QeR88MIs\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Worst<\/a>,\u201d will run on digital and streaming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The spot targets Crist over his time as Governor, critiquing his record on taxes, jobs and public safety funding, and his party switch earlier during his political career. Crist was a Republican until 2010, when he became an independent during his U.S. Senate campaign. He joined the Democratic Party in 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCharlie Crist is running again. Switching parties again. But don\u2019t forget his record,\u201d a male narrator says to start the ad. \u201cForbes Magazine called him \u2018the worst Governor in America,\u2019 massive job losses, and $2 billion in new taxes on us, and Charlie Crist\u2019s property tax scheme led to defunding local law enforcement: 161 fewer men and women in uniform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ad\u2019s narrator changes mid-spot to a female voice supporting Welch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jakeforflorida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-805165 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Jake-Ad-July-2026-728-x-90-px72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNo wonder police and firefighters back Ken Welch,\u201d the second narrator states. \u201cKen Welch never quits standing strong for St. Pete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/adrienne-bogen\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Adrienne Bogen<\/a>, Chair of St. Petersburg Progress, explained the ad in a news release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cForbes didn\u2019t call Charlie Crist the \u2018worst governor in America\u2019 for nothing \u2014 on his watch, we lost jobs by the thousands, watched him tack on $2 billion in new taxes, and then he pushed a property tax scheme that gutted local budgets. St. Pete deserves better than a career politician just trying to pretend none of that happened and buy his way into another elected office,\u201d Bogen said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The campaign presented several other criticisms of Crist\u2019s tenure as Governor, including state revenue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2009\/oct\/26\/charlie-crist\/gov-charlie-crist-says-he-has-reduced-size-state-g\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">declines during the Great Recession<\/a>, criticism of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rstreet.org\/commentary\/charlie-crist-a-sorry-legacy\/&amp;ust=1783700040000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw03rwTvKjHafgQQVq-zbJXi&amp;hl=en&amp;source=gmail\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">property tax changes<\/a> backed during his administration and law enforcement concerns tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdle.state.fl.us\/getContentAsset\/e01cc962-8e57-428c-b103-cd88dfd977cd\/73aabf56-e6e5-4330-95a3-5f2a270a1d2b\/Lawton-Ray-Research-paper.pdf?language=en\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">local budget cuts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jonathan Vazquez, President of the Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.suncoastpba.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">SCPBA<\/a>), said first responders are supporting Welch because of his relationship with public safety agencies and his handling of city issues. The SCPBA was among the first organizations to endorse Welch\u2019s campaign for re-election.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hklaw.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-702884 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Florida_Politics_and_Influence_Magazine_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFirst responders are proud to stand with Mayor Ken Welch. He understands the challenges facing our departments, has been here moving the city forward, and brings the vision St. Pete needs in this moment. Ken Welch is a strong partner we can count on to keep delivering for us,\u201d Vazquez said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ad lands during a stretch in which Crist\u2019s campaign and allies have also been active on the airwaves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The St. Petersburg Progress ad was posted to YouTube on Wednesday, one day before Crist\u2019s campaign published an ad featuring St. Petersburg Democratic Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/783866-senate-honors-darryl-rousons-legacy-of-recovery-advocacy\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Darryl Rouson<\/a> \u2014 a longtime Democratic leader in St. Petersburg and the city\u2019s Black community \u2014 saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pg3OnwvFtaQ\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">he intends to vote for Crist<\/a> after previously endorsing both Crist and Welch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rouson had praised both men while leaving his final voting decision unresolved. But in Crist\u2019s ad, he said elections ultimately require a choice and publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/806667-after-dual-endorsements-for-charlie-crist-and-ken-welch-darryl-rouson-says-hell-vote-for-crist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">committed to voting for Crist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crist has also benefited from messaging from St. Pete Shines, the political committee backing his campaign. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/804911-in-new-ad-st-pete-mayor-ken-welchs-worst-number-gets-the-hollywood-treatment\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A recent ad<\/a> from the committee leveraged generative artificial intelligence footage to resurface a Tampa Bay Times report finding that Welch swiped his keycard into City Hall on 34% of workdays during his first eight months in office. Another St. Pete Shines ad targeted Welch over his decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/802040-charlie-crist-pac-drops-latest-ad-brutally-attacking-ken-welch-over-moffitt-loss\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reject a proposed Moffitt Cancer Center<\/a> campus downtown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The dueling ads mark the final stretch of the Mayoral campaign before the Aug. 18 election. Welch and Crist face a field that also includes former Shore Acres Neighborhood Association President <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/kevin-batdorf\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Kevin Batdorf<\/a>, City Council Member <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/brandi-gabbard\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Brandi Gabbard<\/a>, former Fire Chief <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/jim-large\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jim Large<\/a>\u00a0and community advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/maria-scruggs\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Maria Scruggs<\/a>.
