A South Florida man has spent years growing his collection of sports cards. When he tried to add to it with an online purchase \u2013 the order never showed up. So he called Help Me Howard with Brandon Beyer.<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cThis is my collection of cards that\u2019s been built up over the last 12 years or so.\u201d<\/p>\n
Twenty-three-year-old Tyler has an incredible collection of sports cards.<\/p>\n
Brandon: \u201cWhat do you think this one is worth?\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cI\u2019ve had people try to buy it from me for around $8,000 but I won\u2019t sell it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Boxes and boxes of cards.<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cIn this bin is my [Florida] Panthers collection specifically.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hockey is clearly his favorite.<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cI grew up, we always went to hockey games and had season tickets and that\u2019s the one I liked watching the most.\u201d<\/p>\n
He and his brother grew up playing organized sports. Mom rooting them on all those years.<\/p>\n
Renee: \u201cTheir rooms are, every wall from floor to ceiling, is sports memorabilia.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now grown, their love for competition has turned into a hobby.<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cWe run cards at $1 and just let them run on auction, it\u2019s a live auction platform.\u201d<\/p>\n
So when he bought six cards online for thousands of dollars \u2013 it wasn\u2019t unusual.<\/p>\n
Brandon: \u201cHow much were you spending?\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cThe total amount was $9,330.\u201d<\/p>\n
Renee: \u201cIt\u2019s their money. They work hard and they know what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
What was unusual is the cards never showed up.<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cAnd then a few weeks later, I found out that he sold one of the cards that I bought to someone else as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler used his credit card and a third-party company to make the purchase.<\/p>\n
When the cards didn\u2019t arrive \u2013 his credit card refunded him nearly $6,000.<\/p>\n
But he couldn\u2019t get the $3,400 back from the third party. Months went by.<\/p>\n
Renee: \u201cWe did the appeals process two or three times and by that second or third time they said, \u2018Sorry, you cannot open any more cases \u2013 it\u2019s done.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Howard, it\u2019s a lot of money \u2013 even for a big time collector.<\/p>\n
Every card he has is carefully protected but who\u2019s looking out for Tyler?<\/p>\n
Howard Finkelstein: \u201cWhen you involve a third-party company for payment services \u2013 you are agreeing to their rules and regulations. In this case, Tyler never received the sports cards he paid for, and it would appear he qualifies for reimbursement under their guidelines. They should return his money.\u201d<\/p>\n
We emailed the company Tyler was dealing with and were told they\u2019d take another look. And within days:<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cThey gave me a call and told me that they were going to put it into my account.\u201d<\/p>\n
Don\u2019t expect Tyler\u2019s collection to dwindle any time soon. Not with mom rooting him on.<\/p>\n
Renee: \u201cYou can\u2019t stop your hobby because of one bad experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
After all \u2013 she\u2019s the one who called Help Me Howard.<\/p>\n
Tyler: \u201cYep, it was a good decision. It was the best outcome we could have imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n
Howard says, where you can, use your credit card, oftentimes they have more protections in place.<\/p>\n
