In 2026, nearly 1 in 5 working adults in Miami live at home, too, except most of them have jobs.

New report shows Miami ranking third among the nation’s 50 largest metro areas for the share of working adults ages 25 to 40 who live with their parents, trailing only Riverside, California, and Los Angeles.

According to a LendingTree analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, 17.88% of working adults in that age range are living at home, a number that’s becoming increasingly familiar across the Metropolitan Miami area and across South Florida, where rents have consistently outpaced wages.

The financial gap explains why.

Working adults who live with their parents earn 43.5% less on average than their independent peers nationwide, roughly $39,622 a year compared with $70,137. And the math on renting alone doesn’t help. Across the 50 largest metros, Tampa posted the highest rent burden in the analysis, with someone living at home needing to devote 54.3% of their income to afford a one-bedroom apartment independently, which closely mirrors what South Florida renters face.

Nine of the 10 U.S. metro areas with the highest shares of young adults living at home are in California, Texas or Florida, according to Pew Research Center. Regionally, young adults in the South are more likely to live with parents than those in the Midwest, though less likely than those in the West or Northeast.

Nationally, the trend has reached a record high. An estimated 25.2 million adults under 35, roughly 33% of that age demographic, now live with their parents, according to Realtor.com’s analysis of Census data, matching the pandemic-era peak. Housing, not unemployment, is driving it: roughly 70% of 25- to 34-year-olds living at home are employed. Since 2019, the median U.S. home listing price has climbed 34% to $430,000, while median rent is up nearly 18% to $1,673 a month.

The trend starts early. By age 22, traditionally when college graduates first rent on their own, nearly half, 49%, are still living at home, up from 46% before the pandemic.

For many young adults weighing Miami’s cost of living against a childhood bedroom, the numbers make the choice look less like a setback and more like a strategy.

U.S. Census Bureau, LendingTree, Pew Research Center, Realtor.com

It’s not the plot of Failure to Launch – the 2006 romantic comedy where Matthew McConaughey plays a…

[15
138307,8373,138306,225,227,226,11435,126,123,138301,138302,138305,480,138303,138304
post-335834","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-hialeah","tag-adults-living-with-parents-statistics","tag-cost-of-living","tag-florida-cost-of-living-young-adults","tag-hialeah","tag-hialeah-headlines","tag-hialeah-news","tag-housing-costs","tag-key-biscayne","tag-miami","tag-miami-adults","tag-miami-adults-living-with-parents","tag-miami-rent-affordability","tag-real-estate","tag-south-florida-housing-costs","tag-young-adults-living-at-home-2026
["GET
