JetBlue Airways<\/a> (B6, New York JFK<\/a>) is seeking to obtain up to 30 gates at Fort Lauderdale International<\/a>, taking over the void left by Spirit Airlines<\/a> after its collapse earlier in 2026. <\/p>\n

Chief executive Joanna Geraghty told South Florida\u2019s Sun Sentinel newspaper that JetBlue believes Fort Lauderdale is one of its six US \u201cfocus cities,\u201d where it can attract the most customers<\/a> and be profitable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are definitely going to need more resources in the form of gates,\u201d she said, adding that the company is working with the Broward County Aviation Department to support its continued growth. <\/p>\n

ch-aviation schedules data shows JetBlue holds around 40% of the weekly capacity at Fort Lauderdale, while its nearest competitor, Delta Air Lines<\/a>, holds around 12%.<\/p>\n

Geraghty added that Fort Lauderdale is JetBlue\u2019s preferred option to other Florida airports because rates are \u201csignificantly lower.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, despite its interest in taking over the gap in the market left by Spirit Airlines at Fort Lauderdale, JetBlue is not bidding for Spirit\u2019s headquarters<\/a> in Dania Beach, Geraghty confirmed. \u201cAt this point, we are not interested in the former headquarters building. We\u2019ve got a pretty sizeable footprint here already.\u201d <\/p>\n

But the company is \u201cin the mix\u201d for other Spirit assets that will soon be auctioned, she said, without disclosing more. <\/p>\n
