{"id":337157,"date":"2026-07-11T19:32:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T19:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/337157\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T19:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T19:32:13","slug":"rick-baker-endorses-charlie-crist-says-st-pete-needs-a-mayor-willing-to-show-up-for-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/337157\/","title":{"rendered":"Rick Baker endorses Charlie Crist, says St. Pete needs a Mayor &#8216;willing to show up for work&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker is endorsing Charlie Crist for the job he once held, adding another influential voice in St. Pete politics to Crist\u2019s corner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Baker, a registered Republican, is endorsing Crist despite political differences \u2014 Crist is a Democrat \u2014 because he said he believes bipartisanship should return to the city, and that the mayoral election should reflect what it is by statute: nonpartisan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen I was in office, we treated it that way,\u201d Baker said, naming a number of accomplishments achieved through collaborations with both Democrats and Republicans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That includes, among other accomplishments, working with former Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson to get funding for marine science after the BP oil spill; a control tower at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stpete.org\/residents\/albert_whitted_airport\/index.php\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Albert Whitted Airport<\/a> that required collaboration with then-Vice President Joe Biden, a Democrat; and work with former Republican Gov. Jeb Bush to secure funding for the building at the downtown airport where <a href=\"https:\/\/thehangarstpete.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The Hangar<\/a> restaurant is located.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNone of the Midtown efforts we would have been able to do without Republicans and Democrats, and that\u2019s why its design is a nonpartisan race. We\u2019ve gotten away from that, but I think it\u2019s time we get back. And I\u2019m confident Charlie Crist will do that,\u201d Baker added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caseyaskar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-800998 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Askar-FL_Display-Graphics_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crist and Baker have known each other for decades, and they graduated the same year from Florida State University, in 1978. Baker also praised Crist for being \u201can impeccably honest person and a good human being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While Baker did not directly mention incumbent Mayor Ken Welch, who is seeking re-election, he offered a subtle reference to an issue recently spotlighted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/804911-in-new-ad-st-pete-mayor-ken-welchs-worst-number-gets-the-hollywood-treatment\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">digital ad<\/a> shared by St. Pete Shines, the political committee supporting Crist for Mayor. The ad notes that in Welch\u2019s first year of office, he swiped in at City Hall just 34% of work days, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/st-petersburg\/2022\/10\/26\/is-being-mayor-st-petersburg-floridas-fifth-largest-city-remote-job\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tampa Bay Times investigation<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Baker pointed to his work bringing the <a href=\"https:\/\/gpstpete.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Grand Prix<\/a> to St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThat was an amazing effort to bring IndyCar to St. Petersburg,\u201d Baker said. \u201cBut you can\u2019t do it unless you\u2019re willing to show up for work every day, first of all, and you\u2019re willing to put the effort and the time in to do it, and you\u2019re really committed to making your city better. I believe Charlie\u2019s, I know Charlie\u2019s got the passion for St. Petersburg, and I think he\u2019s going to be a great Mayor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Baker served from April 2001 until early 2010, winning re-election in 2005 with nearly 70% of the vote. During his tenure, Baker was known for his efforts to revitalize St. Pete\u2019s urban core, including downtown and the predominantly Black neighborhoods just south of downtown, which Baker dubbed \u201cMidtown.\u201d His revitalization work earned Baker respect among the city\u2019s African American population.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kathleenpeters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-800314 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Peters728x90-May-15-2023-at-17.01.44-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"91\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Throughout his tenure, Baker was able to secure new infrastructure for long-neglected neighborhoods, and he brought a St. Petersburg College campus and a retail post office to Midtown. The former Mayor also spearheaded robust education and youth mentorship programs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Baker is largely credited with launching St. Pete\u2019s renaissance, laying the foundation for the city to transition from what some mocked as \u201cGod\u2019s waiting room\u201d due to the aging population, into the thriving community of arts, culture and activity that it is today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His support follows another significant nod from state Sen. Darryl Rouson. Rouson had initially endorsed Welch, but later added Crist in a dual endorsement. This week, Rouson announced that he has <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/806667-after-dual-endorsements-for-charlie-crist-and-ken-welch-darryl-rouson-says-hell-vote-for-crist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">decided to vote for Crist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crist also recently earned key support from within City Hall. St. Petersburg City Council Member Gina Driscoll this week became the first on the board <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/806160-gina-driscoll-first-city-council-member-to-back-charlie-crist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">to back Crist<\/a>, a decision that bucked both the incumbent and Driscoll\u2019s colleague, Brandi Gabbard, who is also running for Mayor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crist also previously unveiled a <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/804964-charlie-crist-rolls-out-democratic-backing-in-bid-to-unseat-ken-welch\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">larger slate of Democratic leaders<\/a> supporting his campaign for Mayor, including U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, former U.S. Reps. Cheri Bustos of Illinois and Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, former state Rep. Ben Diamond, former Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary and former state Rep. Frank Peterman, current and former Tampa and St. Petersburg City Council members, and other political leaders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Endorsements aren\u2019t the only area in which Crist is performing. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/805326-poll-charlie-crist-opens-double-digit-lead-in-st-pete-mayors-race-as-support-for-ken-welch-collapses\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A St. Pete Polls survey<\/a> conducted in the final days of June found Crist 12 percentage points ahead of Welch overall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what\u2019s potentially worse news for the incumbent is it found him bleeding support among the Black community, dropping from 55% support in March to just 42% in late June. Where Welch dropped 13 percentage points, Crist climbed 14 percentage points, from 16% support in March to 30% in the more recent poll. Now, Welch is just 12 percentage points ahead of Crist among the city\u2019s Black voters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And Crist continues to dominate fundraising. As of the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/806975-ken-welchs-political-committee-spends-4-times-what-it-raises-as-charlie-crist-widens-money-lead\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">most recent campaign finance reports<\/a> last week, Crist has more than $1.2 million available between his official campaign account and affiliated political committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89558\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">St. Pete Shines<\/a>. Welch has less than $260,000 available between his campaign account and his St. Petersburg Progress political committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also running in the race are former Shore Acres Neighborhood Association President Kevin Batdorf, former St. Pete Fire Chief Jim Large and former St. Petersburg NAACP President Maria Scruggs.
