GAINESVILLE, Fla. \u2013 The Florida Gators added a new name to their lengthy list of first round MLB Draft choices on Saturday afternoon, as the Cleveland Guardians selected UF right-handed pitcher Liam Peterson<\/a> with the 19th overall pick.
\n\u00a0
\nBecoming the 21st first-round pick in team history (27th including the secondary phase), Peterson holds status as the fifth-highest pitcher and 10th-highest player to be drafted in program history. The only UF pitchers to have been chosen earlier than Peterson are A.J. Puk (2016), John Burke (1991), Brady Singer (2018) and Alex Faedo (2017). Peterson is the eighth-highest pick of the Kevin O’Sullivan era (2008-present).

\nWith Peterson going to Cleveland, O’Sullivan has now produced 117 MLB draft picks across his 19-year tenure highlighted by 65 pitchers alone for an average of over three hurlers per season. Peterson represents O’Sullivan’s 24th pitcher to be selected in the first five rounds, which ranks third nationally since 2008. In that span, the Gators’ 15 first-round picks are the second-most in the country.

\nAs a native of Palm Harbor, Fla., Peterson is the 232nd individual draft choice in team history. Excluding the 2020 Draft, at least one Gator has been selected every year since 1997 featuring multiple UF players in every draft dating back to 1998.

\nServing as a weekend starter for all three seasons in Orange & Blue, Peterson made 50 career appearances while working to a 5.03 ERA, .255 batting average against and 284-to-112 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 216 2\/3 innings pitched. Peterson’s 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings rank fifth in program history.

\nPitching in his true junior campaign, Peterson started 16 games in 2026 while notching career highs in innings pitched (84 1\/3) and strikeouts (111) \u2013 the latter of which paced the squad. He concluded the season ranking eighth in the SEC in strikeouts, ninth in games started and 13th in strikeouts per nine (11.9). During his final eight outings, Peterson completed seven frames three times featuring his first-career, complete-game victory at LSU on May 15.

\n“The 6-foot-5 Peterson presents an exciting combination of now stuff and projection. His fastball sat in the mid-90s as a sophomore and he’s shown the ability to reach back for 98-99 mph, both last spring and in short looks this fall. The pitch can show good carry at times, though it can flatten out occasionally and get hit more than it should. Florida calls a lot of sliders and Peterson’s mid-80s breaker has improved into a solid out pitch, though there are some scouts who think his 12-to-6 hammer curve is a better, but not utilized, offering. His changeup has also improved with solid fade and depth. Peterson’s slot has returned to a higher three-quarters slot, similar to where he was in high school, that could serve him well. He can get a little over-aggressive in his mode of operation on the mound, leading to some command issues. There aren’t many college arms with better pure stuff in this class and if he can take another step forward in terms of execution, he could show up in top of the Draft conversations.”

\n“Peterson posted a 3.86 ERA through 15 starts and 79.1 innings as a junior in 2026. He has a prototype starter’s frame at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds and throws from a steep vertical arm slot. He throws a high-carry four-seam fastball that averages around 96 mph and has been up to 100. His fastball has clear plus traits and power, but he needs to improve his command to avoid throwing middle-middle heaters that get hit hard. All three of his secondaries are standout swing-and-miss pitches. A high-spin slider in the upper-80s is his go-to secondary and a clear plus offering with sharp biting action that helped him generate a 53% miss rate. He throws the pitch nearly half the time against righties. Against lefties, Peterson will mix in a mid-80s changeup and a curveball around 80 mph. While Peterson has less confidence and feel for his changeup and curveball, they are also potential plus pitches that vex hitters when he can consistently put them over the plate\u2026”
