Playwright (and erstwhile CL theater critic) Mark E. Leib made a big splash last year with \u201cWhen the Righteous Triumph,\u201d his award-winning play about the student sit-ins that integrated Tampa lunch counters in the 1960s. <\/p>\n

Now, with \u201cThe House in Hyde Park,\u201d he\u2019s delving into another significant chapter in the city\u2019s history: the experience of Jewish businesses in Ybor in the 1920s. <\/p>\n

Their customers represented a cross-section of Ybor\u2019s polyglot populace, but they were also operating amidst widespread gambling and prostitution. Would moving to the city\u2019s most exclusive neighborhood<\/a> sacrifice tradition for assimilation? <\/p>\n

Full disclosure: This writer was in \u201cTriumph,\u201d and he\u2019ll also be in the reading of \u201cHyde Park\u201d (pays to have been the playwright\u2019s editor, I guess). There will be an audience talkback after the reading.<\/p>\n
