TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County Commissioners discussed the future of fire services in the county on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The county attorney updated commissioners on the fire service agreement as the latest in the back-and-forth between the city and county. <\/p>\n
At Tuesday\u2019s meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to notify the city in writing that they are not following their joint agreement.<\/p>\n
County Commission Chair Christian Caban says, under their current agreement, if the contract is terminated, the City of Tallahassee would have to transfer fire-related assets to the county at a reasonable cost.<\/p>\n
He says the city is now arguing this isn\u2019t a termination, but rather an expiration of the agreement which would mean the county would not receive those assets at a discounted cost.<\/p>\n
Caban says the city manager previously sent the county a letter referencing termination. <\/p>\n
County staff plans to provide written notice to the City of their \u201cnoncompliance with the Interlocal Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n
The wording could make a big difference for people living in the unincorporated areas of the county but Caban says residents shouldn\u2019t be concerned.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to do what\u2019s best for all county residents and we\u2019re going to make sure that there is going to be no lapse in service with county residents at all,\u201d Caban said. \u201cThey will be able to maintain fair, equitable and affordable services that treat all residents equally, which is currently not happening. <\/p>\n
Caban says the county will hold a workshop in September where commissioners will review data and feedback from consultants to help determine the best and safest way to provide fire services moving forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now they are just playing petty political games and trying to make the county uncontrollable and invoke fear on residents which is just wrong, it\u2019s not really going to affect us. In September we have a workshop coming back,\u201d Caban said. \u201cThe county will get together, we\u2019ll have all the feedback, we\u2019ll have all the data from our consultants and we\u2019ll come up with a good safe and equitable way to provide fire services.\u201d<\/p>\n
WCTV asked the city and Mayor Dailey for comment, but they would not provide one. <\/p>\n
