AUDUBON PARK, Fla. \u2013 A resident in Orlando\u2019s Audubon Park neighborhood said she\u2019s recently seen coyotes in the area \u2014 and worries about what that could mean for outdoor small pets.<\/p>\n
Becky Booker said a neighbor told her a cat was killed by a coyote. \u201cThe lady down the street had her cat killed by one,\u201d Booker said.<\/p>\n
Booker also shared video showing two coyotes near the intersection of Chelsea Place and Chelsea Street. She said the sightings quickly became a neighborhood conversation \u2014 and not everyone agreed on what should happen next.<\/p>\n
Some neighbors suggested trying to get rid of the animals. \u201cPeople saying we need to get rid of them\u2026 We\u2019ve got BB guns we can shoot \u2019em,\u201d Booker recalled, adding she doesn\u2019t support that approach.<\/p>\n
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says coyotes are present in all 67 Florida counties, and recommends taking steps to reduce the chances of conflict \u2014 especially for people with small pets.<\/p>\n
FWC advice includes:<\/p>\n
Walk dogs on a short leash\u00a0in areas where coyotes have been spotted.<\/p>\n
Check fencing\u00a0to make sure there are no gaps or entry points.<\/p>\n
Keep small pets indoors, particularly in neighborhoods reporting coyote activity.<\/p>\n
Booker said she has small pets at home. When asked if her cats and dogs are small, she responded, \u201cYes, they are.\u201d<\/p>\n
FWC says communities dealing with repeated coyote issues can reach out for help. The agency notes that wildlife assistance biologists are available to discuss options with communities experiencing conflicts with coyotes.]<\/p>\n
