TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 Earlier this year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law<\/a> bringing five new specialty plates to the state.<\/p>\n

That law (SB 246<\/a>) allows the FLHSMV to create the following new specialty license plates:<\/p>\n

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)<\/p>\n

Annual use fees from the sale of this plate will go to the UFC Foundation, which must use the funds to support charities and nonprofits, such as children\u2019s hospitals, support for first responders\/military members, and youth mentorships.<\/p>\n

According to the legislation, the words \u201cUFC Lives Here\u201d must appear at the bottom of the plate.<\/p>\n

Miami Northwestern Alumni Association<\/p>\n

Annual use fees from the sale of this plate will go to the Miami Northwestern Alumni Association, which must use the proceeds to fund academic programs, athletic programs and need-based scholarship programs.<\/p>\n

This funding would be to the benefit of Miami Northwestern Senior High School students and the school\u2019s Performing and Visual Arts Center.<\/p>\n

According to the legislation, the words \u201cMiami Northwestern Alumni Association\u201d must appear at the bottom of the plate.<\/p>\n

Annual use fees from the sale of this plate will go to the Hoober Brothers Foundation<\/a>, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing public spaces throughout the state.<\/p>\n

According to the legislation, the word \u201cOUTSIDER\u201d must appear at the bottom of the plate.<\/p>\n

Annual use fees from the sale of this plate will go to the St. Petersburg College Foundation to help fund student scholarships and initiatives that embolden student success.<\/p>\n

According to the legislation, the words \u201cSt. Petersburg College\u201d must appear at the bottom of the plate.<\/p>\n

First Responders Resiliency<\/p>\n

Annual use fees from the sale of this plate will be given to the First Responders Resiliency Foundation Corp. to fund mental health services for first responders.<\/p>\n

According to the legislation, the words \u201cFirst Responders Resiliency\u201d must appear at the bottom of the plate.<\/p>\n

IF APPROVED, WHEN WILL THESE NEW SPECIALTY PLATES BE AVAILABLE?<\/p>\n

In short: drivers can begin buying any new plates starting on Oct. 1, though it might take a while before drivers will actually receive one.<\/p>\n

According to state officials, each plate\u2019s respective organization is supposed to begin offering pre-sale vouchers when any new laws go into effect on Oct. 1.<\/p>\n

Starting on that date, the organizations will have two years to sell 3,000 vouchers before the license plate will be manufactured.<\/p>\n

If the pre-sale period ends without an organization hitting that target, their respective specialty plate will instead be deauthorized, meaning it won\u2019t actually be produced.<\/p>\n

In that case, anyone who bought a pre-sale voucher for the plate can apply for a refund<\/a>.<\/p>\n

WHAT WILL THEY ALL LOOK LIKE?<\/p>\n

Each respective organization is responsible for submitting a proposed art design to the Division of Motorist Services (DMS) within 60 days of Oct. 1, when any new laws officially take effect.<\/p>\n

The DMS will then be responsible for developing the specialty plate based on state requirements. While designs haven\u2019t been released yet, they can be printed in one of two ways: center and left-hand.<\/p>\n

The state specifications for specialty plate designs are as follows:<\/p>\n

Layout specifications for a Florida specialty license plate (Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles)<\/p>\n

The characters on the plate will be roll-coated in black, blue, green, red, or white ink.<\/p>\n

Contrast between the plate\u2019s background colors and the characters must be defined enough for law enforcement officers to be able to clearly read the characters during both nighttime and daytime.<\/p>\n

The word \u201cFLORIDA\u201d must be printed at the top of the plate in \u201cArial\u201d font and size 75 point. Meanwhile, the bottom words must be in \u201cArial Bold.\u201d<\/p>\n

IS IT A CENTER DESIGN?<\/p>\n

The center graphic must be no larger than 2.5 inches wide by 3 inches high.<\/p>\n

The license plate number must have three characters to the left and three to the right of the centered graphic design.<\/p>\n

“Save the Manatee” Specialty License Plate (Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles)<\/p>\n

IS IT A LEFT-SIDE DESIGN?<\/p>\n

The graphic must instead be on the left side of the license plate and be no larger than 3.5 inches wide by 3 inches high.<\/p>\n

The license plate is limited to five characters printed on the right side of the graphic.<\/p>\n
