Education has proven to be the great equalizer, a critical component of the fabric of our country. It is a harbinger of success for the next 250 years and beyond.

The history of U.S. public higher education, specifically, spans more than two centuries. Notably, 1905 was the landmark year during which Florida’s statewide public university system was created. The University of North Florida has served as Northeast Florida’s public higher education provider for 54 years.

UNF opened its doors on Oct. 2, 1972, to 2,027 upper division and master’s level students, with four major buildings and three colleges. Now welcoming its largest class ever, the university continues to add and expand facilities that comprise a footprint extending from St. John’s Bluff to Kernan Boulevard.

The university’s 2023-28 strategic plan serves as a roadmap for UNF’s continued rise, drawing inspiration from the Osprey’s strength, focus and ability to soar. Embraced and enacted by faculty, staff and students, the plan has helped drive record performance and institutional success.

Need a news break? Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more! In fact, last year UNF realized the largest percentage increase in the performance-based funding metrics established by the Florida State University System Board of Governors in its 13-year history. This achievement, which we recognize and celebrate, reflects UNF’s commitment to delivering high-quality educational experiences and supporting student success.

Our momentum is evident in UNF’s growing enrollment, rising levels of excellence and the largest graduating class in its history, with over 2,190 graduates this spring. Looking ahead, the strategic plan continues to guide the university’s aspirations to increase student success, strengthen retention, expand enrollment and advance its goal to become a Research 1 institution.

Also to be celebrated are the generous donors who continue to invest in student success and in turn, a brighter future for all. This year also marked a record year of philanthropic donations to the UNF Foundation, resulting in the highest annual giving total in the University’s 54-year history.

Among the generous donations during the Spring 2026 semester was $8 million from the Estate of Kernan R. Hodges in support of renovations and upgrades to Hodges Stadium, home to the UNF soccer and track and field teams. UNF student-athletes soar even higher when philanthropic investments translate into scholarships, renovations of facilities and programmatic enhancements.

We are proud that Spring 2026 marked the 30th consecutive semester in which the average grade point average for athletes was 3.5.

Strategic partnerships with local businesses will continue to enhance experiential learning, internships, employment and research opportunities. Among the partnerships celebrated during the Spring 2026 semester was the May 11 announcement that Mayo Clinic will serve as the official health care provider of UNF athletics.

Student-athletes and staff will benefit from on-site clinical services and access to Mayo Clinic’s sports medicine and orthopedic care. Critical to advancing research, the Perry Weather Heat Lab at UNF’s Korey Stringer Institute opened on May 18 with the goal of researching the effects of extreme heat on the body.

This interdisciplinary research hub will advance the science of thermoregulation, performance and health and safety.

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, the Museum of Contemporary Art marks its 100th birthday. The heart of downtown Jacksonville is home to the final major work of sculpture by the world-renowned artist Frank Stella, “Jacksonville Stacked Stars,” displayed outside of the museum.

This symbol of creativity, innovation and commitment to the future of our city aligns with UNF’s emphasis on the stars among us ― our students, who shine brighter than ever.

For many, like my family, Jacksonville and UNF continue to be beacons of hope and success. As a daughter of Cuban exiles, a native of Jacksonville, and a double UNF alumna whose mother and aunt were among UNF’s first graduates, I attest to the familial impact of my hometown university on multiple generations. The values of accountability, civility, excellence, a culture of care and integrity are embedded in the fabric of its history. These are the values propelling its future.

Our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” represents America’s hope amid uncertainty, resilience and liberty. The stars on our nation’s flag represent the promise of a brighter future. For UNF, our students are our promise ― the next constellation that will light the path forward for our city, state and nation. Happy birthday, America!

Dr. Angela Garcia Falconetti, CFRE, interim president, University of North Florida, Jacksonville

!["UNF]("https://www.newsbeep.com/us-fl/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/90681298007-june-2026-tu-best-cp-014.JPG")
