It\u2019s Election Day!<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s not a presidential or midterm election year, plenty of statewide races and local elections took place across the United States on Nov. 4.<\/p>\n

Here were the results:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mikie Sherrill wins New Jersey governor\u2019s race <\/p>\n

U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill<\/a> on Tuesday was elected governor of New Jersey, shoring up Democratic control of a state that has been reliably blue in presidential and Senate contests but had shown signs of shifting rightward in recent years.<\/p>\n

Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and four-term member of Congress, defeated Jack Ciattarelli, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Sherrill, 53, offers some reassurance for moderates within the Democratic Party as they navigate the path forward for next year\u2019s midterms. A former prosecutor and military veteran, Sherrill embodies a brand of centrist Democrats who aim to appeal to some conservatives while still aligning with some progressive causes. She campaigned on standing up to Trump and casting blame for voters\u2019 concerns over the economy on his tariffs.<\/p>\n

She will be New Jersey\u2019s second female governor, after Republican Christine Todd Whitman, who served between 1994 and 2001.<\/p>\n

Mikie Sherrill former, House Democrat from New Jersey, has been declared the winner in early reports of the Governor\u2019s face in New Jersey, the Democratic candidate defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a businessman, in a close election.<\/p>\n

Abigail Spanberger wins Virginia governor\u2019s race <\/p>\n

Voters have flipped the governor’s seat to Democratic control as former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger <\/a>wins the governor’s race. She’s the first woman to ever lead the commonwealth.<\/p>\n

Spanberger, 46, ran on a pledge to protect Virginia\u2019s economy from the aggressive tactics of Trump\u2019s second administration, which has culled the civil service, levied tariffs and shepherded a reconciliation bill curtailing the state\u2019s already fragile health care system.<\/p>\n

Why you should care:<\/p>\n

Virginia was one of two states, along with New Jersey, where voters were picking a governor on Tuesday. Voters were also selecting a new mayor in New York City, and in California, were deciding whether to approve a new congressional map that is designed to help Democrats win five more U.S. House seats in next year\u2019s midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Zohran Mamdani wins New York City mayoral race <\/p>\n

Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city\u2019s most liberal mayor in generations.<\/p>\n

The contest drove the biggest turnout in a mayoral race in more than 50 years, with more than 2 million New Yorkers casting ballots, according to the city\u2019s Board of Elections.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s grassroots campaign centered on affordability, and his charisma spoiled Cuomo\u2019s attempted political comeback. The former governor, who resigned four years ago following allegations of sexual harassment that he continues to deny, was dogged by his past throughout the race and was criticized for running a negative campaign.<\/p>\n

Mamdani was born in Uganda, where he spent his early childhood, but was raised in New York City and became a U.S. citizen in 2018.<\/p>\n

Why you should care:<\/p>\n

Just like the governor\u2019s races in Virginia and New Jersey, the results of New York City\u2019s mayoral race will inform both parties, and political experts, on greater voter trends going into 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New York\u2019s diverse population and reputation as the largest metropolitan city in the U.S. sets a fairly good barometer for what other larger cities will consider important issues ahead of the midterm elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

California Prop 50 passes <\/p>\n

California voters approved new congressional district boundaries<\/a> Tuesday, delivering a victory for Democrats in the state-by-state redistricting battle.<\/p>\n

The approval of Proposition 50 gives Democrats a shot at winning as many as five additional seats, just enough to blunt Texas Republicans\u2019 move to redraw their own maps to pick up five GOP seats at Trump\u2019s urging. Texas\u2019 move and California\u2019s response have kicked off a flurry of redistricting efforts around the country, with Republican states appearing to have an edge. Deeply blue California is Democrats\u2019 best opportunity to make up seats.<\/p>\n

Congressional district boundaries are typically redrawn every 10 years to reflect population shifts documented in the census. Mid-decade redistricting is unusual, absent a court order finding fault with the maps in place.<\/p>\n

Five other GOP-led states are also considering new maps: Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana and Nebraska.<\/p>\n

On the Democratic side, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New York and Virginia have proposals to redraw maps, but major hurdles remain.<\/p>\n

All three of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices who sought reelection Tuesday will get another term, ensuring Democratic jurists keep their majority on the presidential battleground state\u2019s highest court.<\/p>\n

Why you should care:<\/p>\n

The result shapes the makeup of the seven-member court through the next presidential election in 2008. The three justices had been elected as Democrats, and voters were deciding whether to extend the court\u2019s Democratic majority. Rejecting all three could have plunged the court into a partisan deadlock if the state\u2019s politically divided government were to be unable to agree on temporary appointees to fill in.<\/p>\n

Reelecting them extends the Democratic majority \u2014 currently 5-2 \u2014 on a court that has been at the center of pivotal fights over voting rights, redistricting and elections.<\/p>\n

The court could again be called on to settle partisan battles over election laws ahead of next year\u2019s midterm contests to decide the governor\u2019s office and the U.S. House majority. Democrats need to gain just three seats in the 2026 elections to take control of the House.<\/p>\n
