WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Nineteen individuals with ties to a Florida street gang called the “Trap Boys” have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud.<\/p>\n

According to court documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office<\/a>, the FBI<\/a> and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office<\/a>, law enforcement began investigating the Trap Boys in 2023. The gang was operating throughout the Middle District of Florida, and the investigation and arrests stemmed from several retaliatory shootings involving the Trap Boys and other violent street gangs.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that during the arrests, investigators found several gang members in possession of large quantities of checks, debit cards, financial statements and identification cards belonging to other people. Further investigation revealed that from July 2021 through November 2023, members of the gang conspired to defraud banks, credit unions, individuals and businesses across Florida, including in Winter Haven, Auburndale, Riverview, Kissimmee, Lakeland, Tampa and Miami.<\/p>\n

Court documents say the group stole checks from businesses and individuals before using check-writing software to alter them and create counterfeit checks by changing bank information, business names and check amounts.<\/p>\n

Investigators said the group also used automated systems and online databases to obtain bank account information for businesses, including transaction histories, account balances and check details.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the group then recruited people to provide their own bank account information, Social Security numbers, debit cards and online banking login credentials. According to investigators, the group used that information to deposit counterfeit checks at dozens of banks and credit unions across Central Florida.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the conspiracy defrauded 26 banks and about 200 victims, including insurance companies, law firms, construction companies, tile companies, auto repair shops, public school districts, colleges and state agencies.<\/p>\n
