Super Girl is celebrating its 20th anniversary and its sixth year in Jacksonville Beach.

This free, nationally televised festival features a World Surf League (WSL) QS2000 women’s competition, live concerts and a weekend-long celebration of sports, wellness, culture and entertainment designed to empower women.

Rick Bratman, founder and CEO of the Super Girl Surf Festival, was inspired to bring this idea to life thanks to his daughter, who went to a high school that did not offer sports. The boys at her school were allowed to participate in a nearby high school’s sports program but the girls were not. Bratman was so shocked by this unequal and unfair treatment of the girls at his daughter’s school that he decided to do something about it.

“I started Super Girl to create more opportunities for women,” he said.

During the two-day event, there will be close to 2,000 women competing in 14 different sports, including shortboard and longboard surfing, beach volleyball, soccer, flag football, cheer and new this year will be a trampoline competition.

The festival’s free live concerts include headlining performances by Switchfoot, Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B and Gym Class Heroes, along with powerful female artists like Emily Zeck, McKenzi Brooke, ANORA, Hello Sister and more.

Some of the top athletes in women’s surfing are expected to attend, including previous Super Girl Champions Kirra Pinkerton, Eden Walla, Leilani McGonagle and Sage Erickson.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Super Girl is introducing several new additions to the festival this year, including a state-of-the-art skate ramp, professional freestyle trampolining hosted by the Freestyle Trampoline Association, and the new Quest for the Cape Championship Series.

“Over the past 20 years, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing an incredible cultural shift. What began when many women in sports and entertainment were often overlooked has evolved into a movement where women are confidently demanding the spotlight and redefining what is possible,” said Bratman.

The surf portion of the event will run daily at the Jacksonville Beach Pier from Saturday, Nov. 7, through Sunday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All concerts, sporting events, classes and activities are free and open to the public.

For information on the concert lineup, surfing, classes, schedules, sports competitions and more, go to www.supergirljax.com.
