ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 St. Lucie County is addressing stormwater management and water quality improvements with a $60 million allocation from the American Rescue Plan. <\/p>\n
County leaders are utilizing these funds to create stormwater treatment areas and enhance septic and sewer systems. <\/p>\n
One project transformed an overgrown field into a stormwater treatment area, where native plants absorb nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, reducing blue-green algae blooms. <\/p>\n
“With these kind of projects do is hold that water and clean it before it goes out to the water bodies,” said Jim Lappert, the county’s water quality director. <\/p>\n
He emphasized the dual benefits of improving stormwater quality and positively impacting the environment. According to Lappert $20 million of the federal funds were dedicated to stormwater projects, while $40 million supported septic and sewer improvements. <\/p>\n
As the county experiences rapid growth, finding locations for additional stormwater treatment areas remains a challenge.<\/p>\n
Residents are encouraged to participate in virtual meetings to discuss stormwater management, with virtual sessions scheduled for Wednesday, Nov 5th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, Nov 6th, from noon to 1 p.m. Click here for links.<\/p>\n
