ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. \u2014 Ronan Donovan<\/a> knows firsthand that the \u2018big bad wolf\u2019 you hear about in \u2018Little Red Riding Hood\u2019 does not describe the wolves he\u2019s seen up-close.<\/p>\n

Donovan, a biologist-turned-National-Geographic-explorer, spent time with wolves in the United States and Canada. The photographs he took during those adventures are now on display, as part of a special exhibit at the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art in St. Pete.<\/p>\n

The wolves Donovan encountered at Yellowstone National Park<\/a> were leery of humans; they\u2019ve been hunted there. The wolves Donovan saw at Ellesmere Island in Canada<\/a> were far less suspicious of Donovan; they haven\u2019t been hunted there.<\/p>\n

\u201c(In Canada) he spent a summer where it\u2019s sunlight 24 hours a day,\u201d said Emily Kapes, Chief Curator at the James Museum. \u201cHe was able to really follow the wolves over the tundra, be there with them for a few months and observe them really closely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donovan turned those observations into an exhibit of photographs<\/a> that Kapes says show wolves are social, work in teams and are not that different from humans.<\/p>\n

It will be at the James Museum<\/a> on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg through Sept. 8. The museum is open seven days a week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ST.
