(CBS12) — South Florida will see another typical summer weather day today, with scattered afternoon thunderstorms developing inland while heat and humidity continue to create dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

The greatest chance for showers and thunderstorms will be across the interior and around the Lake Okeechobee region this afternoon as Atlantic and Gulf Coast sea breezes move inland and collide. While a few showers or storms could develop closer to the coasts earlier in the day, the strongest activity is expected to remain away from the metro areas.

<img alt="Scattered afternoon storms return to South Florida, heat remains a concern. (WPEC)

A weak upper-level disturbance lingering over the northeastern Gulf will provide just enough lift to help thunderstorms develop, even as a layer of Saharan dust continues to bring drier air into the middle levels of the atmosphere. That dry air should keep storm coverage lower than what is typical for July, but it could also allow a few storms to produce stronger wind gusts if they become well established.

Most storms will produce frequent lightning, brief heavy downpours, and gusty winds. An isolated stronger storm capable of producing localized wind damage cannot be ruled out, particularly across the interior where daytime heating will be greatest.

<img alt="Scattered afternoon storms return to South Florida, heat remains a concern. (WPEC)

Outside of the storms, temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s this afternoon. Combined with humidity, it will feel between 100 and 105 degrees across much of South Florida. While heat advisory criteria are not expected to be reached, the heat can still lead to dehydration or heat-related illness. Anyone working or spending time outdoors should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

<img alt="Scattered afternoon storms return to South Florida, heat remains a concern.
