Darian Mensah knew the question was going to come up, and he knew exactly what he was going to say each time he had to address it.<\/p>\n
After all, his last-minute decision in January and leave Duke for Miami right as the transfer portal was closing \u2014 a decision that came after already affirming to Duke that he was staying \u2014 sent shockwaves around college football.<\/p>\n
Mensah was asked about the decision at least five times during the Miami Hurricanes\u2019 45-minute breakout interview session at the ACC Football Kickoff on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
His answers as to why he made the move all boiled down to this: It was a difficult decision, but \u201cbusiness is business,\u201d Mensah said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to compete for a national championship,\u201d Mensah added, \u201cand I think Miami was the spot to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The logistics and the timing of that move, however, hit Duke hard.<\/p>\n
Mensah had signed a two-year name, image and likeness agreement with the Blue Devils when he originally transferred to Duke from Tulane. The school felt he was obligated to honor that deal, which prompted a lawsuit<\/a> in order that attempted to bar him from transferring. Mensah and Duke eventually reached an out-of-court settlement<\/a>. Mensah, along with fellow Duke wide receiver Cooper Barkate (the Blue Devils\u2019 leading receiver and Mensah\u2019s closest friend on the team), transferred to Miami shortly afterward.<\/p>\n The move left Duke scrambling to find a new starting quarterback so late in the offseason cycle. They ultimately signed San Jose State transfer Walker Eget.<\/p>\n Duke running back Nate Sheppard, speaking at ACC Football Kickoff on Friday, called Mensah\u2019s transfer \u201csurprising\u201d and \u201ccrazy.\u201d<\/p>\n Duke coach Manny Diaz said things were \u201cturbulent\u201d in the immediate aftermath of Mensah leaving but that the team \u201chandled it well\u201d overall.<\/p>\n \u201cI think our guys, there\u2019s a closeness at Duke, that our guys believe that there\u2019s \u2018us and them,\u2019\u201d Diaz said Friday, \u201cand they want guys who want to be \u2018us.\u2019 … It is what it is. You move on and solve the problems. That\u2019s what sports is: solve the problems.\u201d<\/p>\n Diaz was asked if he believed Miami was involved in tampering in getting Mensah.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an unanswerable question because ultimately what it came down to \u2014 and this is why it was never an issue for us \u2014 is you can only say what you can prove,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cSo to me, it doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why our issue was never with any other school. Duke was very consistent. The whole issue was simply about a contract that we felt had to be honored, And it wasn\u2019t honored, and what\u2019s the ramification of that? That\u2019s what happened, and all parties were satisfied, and all parties moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n Mensah indeed has moved on \u2014 and wants to move on from the storyline that has dominated his brief tenure with the Hurricanes.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m just here to play football<\/a>,\u201d Mensah said, \u201cand I\u2019ve got a lot of faith in my team and my support system around me.\u201d<\/p>\n The quarterback said he already feels at home with the Hurricanes and that the team welcomed him in with open arms as soon as he arrived, something he wasn\u2019t sure he was expecting from a team that just went on a run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m the new guy coming in,\u201d Mensah said. \u201cObviously, there\u2019s headlines of how much money I\u2019m making, which everybody loves to talk about. But as soon as I stepped on campus, I felt like I was at home, and it\u2019s a big credit to the guys in the locker room for that.\u201d<\/p>\n The Hurricanes also know how important he\u2019s going to be to them to get back to where they want to go.<\/p>\n Mensah completed 66.8% of his passes for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns with six interceptions last season at Duke, which won the ACC title. His total passing yards led Power 4 quarterbacks in 2025 while his passing touchdowns trailed only Indiana\u2019s Fernando Mendoza, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n Prior to his time at Duke, Mensah spent two years at Tulane where in 13 games he completed 66% of his passes for 2,723 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.<\/p>\n Mensah is the Hurricanes\u2019 third marquee transfer quarterback after Cam Ward in 2024 and Carson Beck in 2025. Both players excelled in their lone season at Miami, which wasn\u2019t lost on Mensah.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were blessed to have those two,\u201d Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said, \u201cand we\u2019re beyond blessed again to have Darian.\u201d<\/p>\n Added Mensah: \u201cJust seeing what [offensive coordinator Shannon] Dawson\u2019s done with those two quarterbacks, it\u2019s special. I\u2019m trying to go be special.\u201d<\/p>\n It will be on Mensah to make that dream a reality.. He held off entering the NFL and spurned Duke to compete for a national championship at Miami.<\/p>\n Now, it\u2019s time to handle business.<\/p>\n His message to Hurricanes fans ready for things to start on Sept. 4 at Stanford?<\/p>\n \u201cGet ready for a special season,\u201d Mensah said. \u201cIt\u2019ll be a fun one, and I can\u2019t wait to go out there and put on a show.\u201d<\/p>\n As for what he learned about how to deal with the situations he went through upon leaving Duke and being a mutli-time transfer portaler and the advice he would give to players who might end up in his position?<\/p>\n \u201cKeep a tight circle around you of people that you trust,\u201d Mensah said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people, a lot of agents looking to benefit off your success, and I think that that was something that I had to learn the hard way, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n![\"CHARLOTTE,](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2286238270-GI.JPG\" "\\"2286238270-GI.JPG\\"")
