LeBron James continues to weigh his options in free agency and still hasn\u2019t made a decision on which team he will join for next season. But the future Basketball Hall of Famer has dropped a few clues during the past few days about what will influence that decision.<\/p>\n
During a two-day run at Fanatics Fest NYC and an appearance at CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit in New York this week, James has danced around the question of where he will play this upcoming season after spending the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. But James has discussed the factors that will help him make that decision.<\/p>\n
The Heat remains in pursuit of James in free agency, along with teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe family portion is a big thing. My daughter and my wife and things of that nature, and I\u2019m a big family guy,\u201d James, 41, said during his appearance at CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit on Thursday. \u201cPeople are like, \u2018Hurry up and make a decision, Bron.\u2019 It\u2019s like, OK, it\u2019s not just about the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are so many other factors that I\u2019m factoring in right now on what not only best fit me as a player, what best fit me as a person, my happiness, and also with my family as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
But then James added Friday during a taping of \u201cThe Shop Live\u201d at Fanatics Fest that \u201cwhat\u2019s most important is that I want to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to compete at a high level,\u201d James continued Friday. \u201cI want to join a franchise that shares the same model as myself. That\u2019s like practicing championship habits every day. But trust in the process more than anything. I think you trust the process of actually getting to that point.\u201d<\/p>\n
The crowd at Fanatics Fest went into a tizzy after James\u2019 \u201ctrust the process\u201d reference because some in attendance took it as a reference to the \u201ctrust the process\u201d motto that the 76ers have used for the past decade, but James just laughed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been saying trust the process since I was drafted in 2003,\u201d James said to the crowd. \u201cI don\u2019t know if [76ers center] Joel Embiid was even born yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
James then continued on why trusting the process is critical to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe process is what\u2019s most important,\u201d James said. \u201cBecause if you just fully immerse yourself in that, then the outcome will take care of itself. If you\u2019re already worried about the championship, or you\u2019re already worried about the playoffs, already worried about what lies ahead, then you will skip steps along that journey. So, being with a franchise, being with a group of guys that kind of has the same model.\u201d<\/p>\n
While the Heat can\u2019t offer James proximity to his family if his family remains in California, it can offer him an organization that emphasizes \u201cchampionship habits\u201d and a head coach in Erik Spoelstra who appreciates \u201cthe process.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Heat also plays in a city that offers golf year-round, a sport that James has recently grown to love. But James downplayed golf as a big factor in his free agent decision.<\/p>\n
\u201cListen, I love golf. I really do,\u201d James said during his Thursday appearance at CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit. \u201cBut golf is a sport that you can play for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m in a cold city, if I\u2019m playing on the East Coast, and now the golf course is closed in November, compared to if I\u2019m in the South and they never close, listen, my main focus while I\u2019m playing a game of basketball is to keep the main thing the main thing. And I have always done that. I will find a golf simulator if I\u2019m in the cold, for sure, that will hold me over until they open up. But, listen, keeping the main thing, the main thing has always been the main focus for me. And that\u2019s the reason why everything has worked the way it\u2019s worked.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition, the Heat offers a feeling of familiarity, with James spending four seasons with the Heat from 2010 to 2014 and winning NBA championships with the organization in 2012 and 2013 across four NBA Finals appearances. The four-time NBA MVP also was selected as the league\u2019s MVP two times while with the Heat.<\/p>\n
James, who is preparing for his 24th NBA season, left the Heat as a free agent in 2014 to return to Cavaliers \u2014 the team he left to join the Heat in 2010.<\/p>\n
Even at 41, James remains a very effective player. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game while shooting 51.5% from the field and 31.7% on threes in 60 appearances for the Lakers last season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know. I really don\u2019t,\u201d Heat president Pat Riley said Thursday to a small group of reporters following two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo\u2019s introductory press conference, when asked about where the Heat stands in its pursuit of James. \u201cTo be transparent about it, we\u2019ve had discussions over a week ago, maybe a week before that, about it. But right now, I think we\u2019re like everybody else. We\u2019re just waiting to see what he does, and then we\u2019ll see what happens. But I really can\u2019t answer that right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Antetokounmpo, who was acquired by the Heat in a blockbuster trade this offseason, would welcome James\u2019 return to Miami.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there was a scenario for that to happen, I would be very, very excited,\u201d Antetokounmpo told ESPN on Thursday. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the best players to ever play this game, if not the best. I would be able to learn so much from him.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously, he brings such a championship experience to the team right from Day 1. I think he\u2019s still one of the best players, if not top 25. He has to be up there. You don\u2019t see signs of him slowing down at all. You saw in the playoffs how effective and good he was for the Lakers.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Antetokounmpo, like the rest of the basketball world, is waiting on James to make his decision.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m just like everybody else. We don\u2019t have all the information,\u201d Antetokounmpo told ESPN. \u201cAll the information is in LeBron James\u2019 hands and his family\u2019s hands, and he\u2019s going to make the best decision for him. The history has shown that he\u2019s always made good decisions for his career.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope, if he thinks that Miami Heat is a good decision for him, I would love for him to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n
With 12 players currently signed to standard contracts for next season, the Heat has two to three standard roster spots left to fill.<\/p>\n
The Heat has just about $6.5 million left of its midlevel exception or a minimum contract to offer James since it is hard-capped at the first apron because of the blockbuster trade that landed Antetokounmpo. The Heat could create more room under the first apron to offer James the entire $8.5 million it has left of its midlevel exception by shedding money in a trade.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe only have a couple of rosters spots left, so we do what we can do from that standpoint,\u201d Riley said Thursday when asked if more needs to be added to the roster to bring the Heat to the next level. \u201cBut, yeah, we\u2019re waiting like you guys are waiting and then things could fill up really quick.\u201d<\/p>\n
