{"id":345000,"date":"2026-07-19T04:29:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T04:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/345000\/"},"modified":"2026-07-19T04:29:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T04:29:17","slug":"photos-freed-cuban-political-prisoner-lands-at-miami-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/345000\/","title":{"rendered":"Photos: Freed Cuban political prisoner lands at Miami airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MIA_109OteroAlc\u00c3\u00a1ntara18NEWPPP.JPG\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" title=\"\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Pedro Portal<\/p>\n<p>            pportal@miamiherald.com<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in five years, prominent Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alc\u00e1ntara breathed free air as he arrived at Miami International Airport on Saturday afternoon after being released from Cuban detention.<\/p>\n<p>Otero Alc\u00e1ntara, 38, served a five-year sentence after being imprisoned since July 2021, when he said on social media he was going to join the historic anti-government protests of July 11 \u2014 the largest demonstrations Cuba had seen in decades.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/nation-world\/world\/americas\/cuba\/article316434190.html\">READ MORE: Cuba will release artist and political prisoner Otero Alc\u00e1ntara to exile in Miami<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His longtime friends, who\u2019ve advocated for his release from a maximum security prison in Guanahay, in the province of Artemisa, waited with bated breath at the doors of International Arrivals at the airport for hours.<\/p>\n<p>Cuban activist Salom\u00e9 Garc\u00eda met Otero Alc\u00e1ntara in Havana in 2012 through their work as artists. As she waited for him, she said his friends had been working to ensure his release would be a meaningful moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that he can also have a space together with the people who have been following him and advocating for his release during these five years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00eda said many of those waiting to welcome him were members of the San Isidro Movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you\u2019re seeing is a lot of people who suffered repression in Cuba who were forced out, and we\u2019re happy to welcome him,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p>Anamelys Ramos, a friend of Otero Alc\u00e1ntara, and fellow member of the San Isidro Movement \u2014 a Cuban collective of dissident artists, journalists, and academics formed in 2018 to protest state censorship of artistic expression \u2014 said Saturday had been an incredibly stressful day as they awaited his arrival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been very stressful because until the very last minute we had no confirmation that Luis Manuel was at the airport. People there were waiting for hours, and we even started to think he wasn\u2019t going to arrive,\u201d Ramos said in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>Otero Alc\u00e1ntara left Miami International Airport and headed straight to National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, a Catholic church in Miami\u2019s Coconut Grove neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>With him was a broken statue of the Virgin Mary, which he brought from Cuba as an offering. He shattered it himself at Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed International Airport in Havana before leaving the island and being released.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a gesture that invites us to gather the fragments, to piece together what has been broken, and to believe that healing is still possible,\u201d a news release from Our Lady of Charity reads in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>The church is home to a Marian shrine, a sacred place dedicated to the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nation\u2019s newest Marian shrine, dedicated to Our Lady of Charity, reflects Cuban-American history,\u201d the Archdiocese of Miami website reads. \u201cIts central image is a replica of one honored at Cuba\u2019s national shrine in El Cobre, representing the patroness of Cuba and symbolizing Cuban faith and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cubans have honored the \u201cVirgin of Charity\u201d since the 1600s, according to the Archdiocese of Miami website.<\/p>\n<p>Otero Alc\u00e1ntara has a long history of incorporating the religious symbols into his artwork.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, during Pope Benedict XVI\u2019s visit, Otero Alc\u00e1ntara created a \u201cVirgin of Charity\u201d papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9, but the art piece was banned, according to the Havana Times.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at his journey to Miami<\/p>\n<p>                                          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MIA_102OteroAlc\u00c3\u00a1ntara18NEWPPP.JPG\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"750\" title=\"MIA_102OteroAlc\u00c3\u00a1ntara18NEWPPP.JPG\" alt=\"Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alc\u00e1ntara reacts as he arrives at Miami International Airport.
